Her life began on the day of love but she had to face the tragic twist of never being content in love. Another tragedy was passing away at an age when most women come into their own. Madhubala, a dazzling star of the Indian film industry was born on 14 Feb but died 36 years later. This was an unfortunate way her life paralleled that of the Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe, an actor she was often compared to for her unparalleled beauty. While Marilyn died with an accidental overdose, Madhubala literally had a hole in her heart and pain in her soul that led to her untimely demise.
Maut Wohi Jo Duniya Dekhe, Ghut Ghut Kar Yoon Marna Kya
Jab Pyaar Kiya to Darna Kya
Madhubala may have mouthed these lines but she her death was not publicised per se for the world to see. Death crept up slowly on her but she did love with all her passion sans any fear. Here’s a glimpse at her love life with torrid affairs and relationships that faded away.
Latif
Madhubala and her childhood sweetheart Latif's love lasted till she left for Mumbai. She gave a red rose as a parting gift and Latif kept it with him till she died after which he placed it on her grave. Now a retired IAS officer, Latif goes to her grave every year on the day of her death on 23rd February to place a red rose.
Kidar Sharma
The man who gave Madhubala her first break at the age of 14 in Neel Kamal opposite Raj Kapoor was director Kidar Sharma who fell for her instantaneously. But it was no meant to be as Madhubala was too young at that time and never reciprocated his feelings.
Kamal Amrohi
His movie Mahal made Madhubala a superstar and it was also the beginning of a very complex relationship between her and director Kamal Amrohi. While Madhubala’s father Attaullah Khan was happy with their relationship as he idolised Amrohi, the director was already married with kids and wanted Madhubala to be his second wife. Fate had other plans as she could not agree to sharing her marital life with another woman and reportedly even offered to pay Amrohi to divorce his wife. This led to their breakup and she never saw him again.

Premnath
It was during the shoot of the movie Badal that the most beautiful woman in the film industry proposed to Premnath, her movie’s hero. His joy knew no bounds and he accepted her proposal which came in the form of a red rose and a love note. But the following weeks saw Madhubala distancing herself which agitated Premnath who eventually got to know that she had proposed actor Ashok Kumar in a similar way. But Madhubala’s younger sister Madhur Bhushan says that Madhubala broke off with him as Premnath had asked her to convert her religion.
Dilip Kumar
Madhubala and Dilip Kumar’s unrequited love is perhaps the most painful stories in the film industry. Their love story began when Madhubala was just 17 years old and ended due to her father’s possessiveness about his daughter and his insecurities about losing the breadwinner of the family who was now earning very handsomely as a superstar. The movie Mughal-E-Azam which is about the star-crosssed Mughal ruler’s love story with a courtesan was shot during their breakup even as Madhubala’s health had started to decline. So the pathos portrayed by her is totally surreal. No wonder the movie which had been 10 years into the making became a cult film forever.
Kishore Kumar
Kishore Kumar can be credited as the person who finally gave Madhubala the pleasure of being in a committed relationship by marrying her. But it was a marriage of convenience as Madhubala wanted to get over her breakup with Dilip Kumar and Kishore Kumar was apparently looking towards getting financial help from her. Her declining health and Kishore’s subsequent stardom created a rift with Kishore meeting her only occasionally even as the doctors declared that she had only two years to live. The star met her end on 23 February and with her a golden era of Indian film industry came to an end.
