Tandav Films Co-Founder: Industry Needs More Female Speakers To End Gender Bias

The producers who happen to run the business of cinema at the top are a complete men’s world. Men are leading the film industry and as we all know women get less attention even as actresses. It is the women who need to give confidence to the Hindi film industry that they can run equally better. But the bottom most levels have seen writing and other departments recruiting female roles at large. The industry is open for all, yet it is the Me Too movement that has put the Indian Cinema in the dark spot. Savitaraaj Hiremath, Co-founder & Director, Tandav films feels the industry needs more decorated female speakers that help put an end to gender bias.

She says that although it is understood that the Me Too movement is not only based for this industry but for other corporates prevailing even today. Yet it is the entertainment sector that has managed to increase footfalls more for the public eyes.

After spending 25 years in advertising, my entire life has been about promoting films that understand the challenges; a common man faces on his daily life basis. We entered cinema with one focus which is to be entertaining yet relevant. It all started with the path-breaking and national award-winning film Khosla Ka Ghosla(KKG) which was ahead of its time and showed the path to Good Content Cinema.

I wanted Khosla Ka Ghosla to become that same voice thirteen years ago as it had something important to say to its audience. I had a great time sharing my creative work with my associate Jaideep Sahini who wrote the film and Dibakar who directed the journey of Anupam Kher. The Distributors were apprehensive on its outcome but the Producer in me refused to add any Item Song or change the Director or Cast and insured that there was no compromise on the content of the film. Tandav Film believes in the power of heartwarming storylines. The philosophy always has been to release path-breaking films that are high on content. The production house scores big when it comes to emotional quotient.

Bridging the Gap between Artistic and Commercial Cinema, this Film KKG had primarily Anupam Kher with no Big Stars to boast about. Produced at a small string budget with 40 days shooting schedule back to back the film demonstrated a case of successful filmmaking, where the content was king. The film received numerous national and international accolades as well as it was screened at several international film festivals including Cannes. Today the Bollywood film industry is riding on a new wave of Hindi cinema. The film got featured amongst the profitable 50 best movies of 100 years of Indian Cinema by Forbes Magazine.

Tandav aims at bringing a fresh perspective with a diversity of mind-boggling concepts and new age stories for Indian Cinema. The Content of the film is about Common man's problem with uncommon solutions. As we have seen Khosla has changed the scenario and content had started getting recognition by then. Content has been showcasing an increase in numbers in terms of the viewing thrill at the cinemas.

There are stories which are finding their way into the theatres just on the support of its dialogues, storyline and characters. With rapidly changing consumer tastes, it’s your concept or idea that opens minds and hearts to your story. People want to view films based on the subjects they deal with, and the manner in which they engage with those ideas will see success. The most important factor keeping inmind is to never underestimate the viewing choice of the people; they are always ready for something good.

Currently, we have a sport based concept film to showcase titled ‘Jhund’. Starring Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role, the film reads on the same lines of seeking an active role in Hindi Film Industry. The challenge of ushering meaningful content across the globe will begin with this Hindi biopic as it is finding its way of entering the big league on behalf of Indian entertainment.
