Young mothers travelling to visit the iconic Taj Mahal rejoice! In a first, the Taj Mahal is all set to become the first Indian monument to have exclusive 'baby feeding' rooms which intend to give privacy to breastfeeding mothers.
However, that is not all! There will be two other places in Agra which will give the same facilities to young mothers as well. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) will be earmarking ‘Baby Feeding’ rooms at three popular World Heritage Sites, i.e., Fatehpur Sikri, Taj Mahal, and Agra Fort.
Talking to a news agency, Vasant Kumar Swarnkar, a top official at the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) in Agra said that the baby feeding room would be set up by July to help the “millions of mothers who visit with their babies”. The rooms will have basic facilities, such as chair, table, light, and fan.
The decision was taken after observing the problems that breastfeeding mothers had to face while visiting these monuments, making it embarrassing for mothers when there is a lot of rush and a marked lack of privacy.
Public breastfeeding carries a social stigma in India, and while it is not illegal, is often looked down upon, with the latest case happening in Kolkata last year where a woman was told by employees of a popular mall to breastfeed her baby in the toilet, leading to a huge backlash.
