Solar Eclipse: What Is A Sutak And The Do’s And Don’ts To Follow During This Time

A total solar eclipse will be visible tomorrow and will be the longest total solar eclipse until 2027. It is believed that it will last for around four minutes and 33 seconds. According to reports, the solar eclipse will begin off the coast of New Zealand with Chile and Argentina directly in the path of totality. Although it will not be visible from India and will cover the South Pacific region, there are certain things that you shouldn’t do as per our Vedas.

An eclipse happens when the Moon comes between the Sun and the Earth, blocking out the Sun’s rays and casting a shadow on Earth for a brief period of time.

Do's

  • Chant mantra or do meditation till eclipse ends.
  • Clean your house and sprinkle Ganga Jal in every corner, after sutak ends.
  • Any food cooked before the sutak period must be discarded.
  • Before the sutak period, a few tulsi leaves placed inside the food containers
  • Placing some tulsi leaves in food container will protect your food from getting contaminated.
  • Charities and feeding food to poor people is considered highly auspicious.

  • Pregnant women are strictly advised not to venture out during eclipse can mutilate your baby. Also, it is said that the chances of miscarriage and disability increase due to this.
  • Idols of God, Tulsi and Shami trees should not be touched. After the sutak period, you should take a bath and wear new clothes and sprinkle Ganga Jal on holy sculptures. 
  • All kinds of food consumption, both eating, and drinking are prohibited during this period.
  • Refrain from brushing your teeth or combing your hair.
