The LGBTQIA+ community has long struggled for acceptance and representation in various aspects of society, including the realm of cinema. Bollywood, known for its vibrant storytelling and cultural impact, has often fallen short when it comes to portraying LGBTQIA+ characters and their narratives authentically. In a recent HerZindagi original, Rishab Nanda, a proud gay man, passionately addressed the issue of caricature representations of the LGBTQIA+ community in Bollywood films and television.

The Caricature Representation

Rishab started by highlighting the prevalence of caricature representations that have been sold for years in Bollywood. He pointed out how movies like ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’' perpetuate harmful stereotypes by presenting the idea of a gay character as something that evokes disgust in others. In the film, the reaction of the nanny to Saif’s character being gay showcased the deep-rooted prejudice and lack of understanding present in society. Rishab argued that such portrayals not only reinforce negative stereotypes but also hinder progress towards acceptance and inclusivity.

Mockery and Stereotypes in 'Dostana'

Another film that Rishabh brought up was ‘Dostana,’ in which Abhishek Bachchan's character pretended to be gay. Rishab commented on the portrayal, highlighting how it perpetuates stereotypes of gay men. The exaggerated mannerisms, hip sways, and insecurities depicted in the movie only served to reinforce harmful clichés. Rishab found this portrayal cringeworthy and argued that it did a disservice to the LGBTQIA+ community, especially at a time when people were fighting for their rights.

Rishab acknowledged that there has been progress in the representation of the queer community in Bollywood in recent years. He referred to the landmark decision by the Supreme Court of India on September 6, 2018, which decriminalised Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). This pivotal moment marked a turning point in the portrayal of LGBTQIA+ characters in Indian cinema. He highlighted movies like ‘Aligarh,’ ‘Kapoor and Sons,’ ‘Romil & Jugal,’ ‘Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan,’ ‘Badhaai Do,’ ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga,’ and ‘Four More Shots Please!’ for their sensitive exploration of gay/lesbian relationships and their efforts to question and challenge stereotypical patriarchy.

The Power of Representation

"Love is love, be it in any form, gender, or expression," proclaimed Rishab. He emphasised that representation matters and that cinema has the potential to shape societal perceptions and attitudes. Rishab stressed the importance of offering the queer community a hand of acceptance and inclusivity. Authentic portrayals allowed audiences to connect with LGBTQIA+ characters on a human level, breaking down prejudices, and promoting understanding.

Rishab reiterated the need for ‘real representation over mockery.’ While some progress has been made, there is still a long way to go. He called on Bollywood to take responsibility and challenge harmful stereotypes and caricatures. Instead of using theLGBTQIA+ communityas a source of humour or ridicule, Rishab urged filmmakers to present their stories with empathy, sensitivity, and authenticity.
