Natural perfumes can be quite costly, but fortunately, creating your own at home is simple with just a few ingredients. All you need are some essential oils, a base like rubbing alcohol or jojoba and coconut oil, and a container to store the perfume. Homemade natural perfumes make wonderful gifts for loved ones this Valentine’s Day 2025, or you can create unique scents that can’t be found in stores!
Ingredients For DIY Perfume
- Rollerball jar
- Jojoba oil
- Fractionated coconut oil
- 20-25 drops of essential oils
Recipe For DIY Perfume
Step 1: For easier application, opt for a rollerball jar. Oil-based perfumes can sometimes clog spray bottles, so using a rollerball jar is a better choice. The rollerball allows you to apply the scent to specific areas, such as your wrists or neck, creating a more subtle and delicate fragrance. If you prefer a stronger scent, you can apply the perfume to multiple spots on your body.
Step 2: Pour the jojoba oil and fractionated coconut oil into the jar. Using a funnel, add 1⁄2 fluid ounce (15 mL) of jojoba oil and 1⁄2 fluid ounce (15 mL) of fractionated coconut oil to the bottom of the container. Be sure to measure the oils beforehand, as adding too much carrier oil can dilute the essential oils. Jojoba and fractionated coconut oil can be found at most specialty grocery or health stores. It’s essential to use fractionated coconut oil because it remains liquid, unlike regular coconut oil, which solidifies.

Step 3: Add 20-25 drops of essential oils to the container. Use a dropper or pipette to carefully place the oils into the jar. Make sure to balance the oils properly to avoid making the perfume too strong. Initially, the essential oils will float on top of the other oils when added to the jar.
Step 4: Tighten the rollerball cap and shake the jar. Secure the rollerball lid firmly to avoid leaks. Next, shake the jar and invert it for about 30 seconds to thoroughly mix the oils. Depending on the essential oils you use, they may separate after sitting for a while, so make sure to shake your perfume each time before use.

Step 5: Test the perfume on your arm, wait 10 seconds for it to dry, then smell it. Add 3-5 more drops if you'd like a stronger scent. To make it more noticeable, apply to other areas like your arms, chest, and behind your ears. For a subtler fragrance, add 5-10 drops of jojoba or fractionated coconut oil.
Step 6: Store the jar in a cool, dark place, like a medicine cabinet or drawer, to keep the scent fresh. If carrying it, keep it in a pocket away from sunlight. Dark-colored rollerballs can be kept on the counter for short periods. Oil-based perfumes last 6 months to a year; if the scent fades, make a new batch.
