role of sports in building bridges beyond boundaries

In a world often divided by borders, beliefs, and backgrounds, sport emerges as a rare and radiant force that unites rather than separates. Whether it's a football match in a dusty village square or a global tournament watched by millions, the simple act of play possesses an extraordinary ability to dissolve walls and forge bonds.Komal Mehra, Head - Sports Initiatives and Associations, Usha International, delves intohow games become more than games, they become shared languages, catalysts for empathy, and platforms for peace.

The Power of Play: How Sports Build Bridges Beyond Boundaries

Sport isn’t just about medals or trophies. It’s about moments. A dusty football kicked around by barefoot kids. A group of girls in a village daring to dream differently with a hockey stick in hand. It’s about the magic that happens when people come together – not in competition, but in connection. In a world often divided by politics, class, race, and gender, sports levels the field. It doesn’t matter where you’re from or what language you speak. What matters is how you play. That’s the real badge of honour.

How Sports Build Bridges Beyond Boundaries

As we mark World Athletes Day, let’s celebrate more than athletic wins. Let’s talk about how sport quietly drives change – specially in places where inclusion, opportunity, and empowerment aren’t always a given.

One Ball, One Goal, Many Stories

You don’t need words to play. A shared goal and a little space are enough. From refugee camps to school playgrounds, sport becomes a common language. UNESCO got it right – sport brings people together, teaches respect, and gives young people, especially girls, the confidence to speak up, stand tall, and lead. In Colombia, football helped former child soldiers find a new path.

In India, the Khelo India movement – which targets rural and underserved areas with talent identification, infrastructure development, and scholarships – has helped over 1,000 athletes, proving that rural talent can shine globally.

Play Is Power – for All

It’s not just for the kids. Women find strength in it too. In many places where gender roles are rigid, sport becomes a subtle form of rebellion. It allows women to be loud, visible, and fearless.

Research backs it – girls in sports are more likely to stay in school, marry only when they are ready, and take on leadership roles.

And in places where access to quality education or healthcare is limited, a local game can be a lifeline. It builds focus, boosts mental health, and brings structure to lives that often lack it.

Grassroots Is Where the Heart Is

We cheer loudest when our athletes shine on the world stage. But the true spirit of sport lives on local grounds and in community fields – in games passed down through generations.

Through Usha’s sports initiatives, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the beautiful revival of traditional Indian sports firsthand. Whether it’s Mallakhamb, Chhinj, Thang-Ta, or martial arts like Kalaripayattu, it’s truly inspiring to see young Indians reconnect with their roots and discover both pride and purpose in these age-old games.

Beyond the Field

Sport builds more than just strong bodies. It builds stronger communities. Local clubs often become safe spaces – especially in low-income or high-risk areas. They offer mentorship, discipline, and friendship. They help keep kids off the streets and give them something to strive for.

Even in crisis, sport finds a way. During the pandemic, online chess tournaments connected players across continents. In war-hit Ukraine, displaced youth found healing through athletics. Sport adapts. And it always shows up.

In the End, It’s Simple

Sport doesn’t claim to solve everything. But it does something powerful – it brings people together. It builds confidence in women, resilience in kids, and bonds in communities. It reminds us of where we come from and points to where we can go.

So today, as we celebrate athletes worldwide, let’s also honour the unsung games played in alleys, schoolyards, and dusty village fields. Because when we play together, we grow together.
