Directed by Lakshmi Iyer, ‘First Second Chance’ is a 24-minute short film that was released on June 5 on Hotstar. It stars Renuka Shahane, Devoleena Bhattacharjee, Nikhil Sangha, Ananth Mahadevan and Sahil Uppal. Apart from its popular star cast, here are five reasons why we think that everyone must watch this film. Spoiler Alert!
1. Strong Female Character
Renuka Shahane is a popular name from the movie Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! and co-presenter of a Doordarshan TV show. She is also a film director and screenwriter. In this short film, she played the role of Vaidehi, a grandmother who was sent to an old-age home by her son.
Battling cancer, she is shattered but does not lose the will to live. As her condition improves, she becomes friends with Raman Krishnan, played by Ananth Mahadevan. Without telling her ungrateful and selfish son, she decides to get remarried at an old age.
2. Breaks Stereotypes

The film goes back in time when Raman and Vaidehi were young and working (tips for offices to improve for working mothers) in the same office. He loved her and even confessed his feelings. But she was engaged by then.
In the later part, when Vaidehi’s cancer condition improves, she confesses her feelings for Raman. She says, “I wish to make the rest of my life, the best days of my life.” She further adds, “I have stopped sacrificing my happiness in the name of society.”
3. Emotions Shown With Empathy
In a scene where Vaidehi is alone in her room in the old-age home, she breaks down. She was watching the image of her granddaughter and started crying inconsolably.
Renuka delivered a captivating performance and kept us hooked to the screen. While watching the film, we felt for her as a mother. Emotions on the screen were shown with nuance but never seemed OTT.

In India, it is a rare occurrence, even on television, to see an old couple exploring a new relationship without hesitation. While Raman has always loved Vaidehi, she fell for him because of his selfless caring nature.

Raman helped Vaidehi get better without expecting anything in return. The two got closer while discussing their past, families and kids.
It was not like the modern love we see today in Bollywood movies. This movie showed us unconventional love, portrayed with empathy and normalcy.
5. Cinematography
Directors and editors have crafted each segment beautifully. The frequent shift between the reality of today and reminisces of the past did not confuse us about what was happening. Each scene was shot with perfection and captured every emotion of the actors.
