12 Real-Life Tragedies That Took Place on Friday the 13th

What makes Friday the 13th interesting is that real disasters have actually happened on this date. Some of these events were so terrible that they changed history, killed thousands of people, or created new laws and systems we still use today.

The Knights Templar Massacre (1307)

The oldest recorded major tragedy on Friday the 13th happened on October 13, 1307. King Philip IV of France ordered his soldiers to arrest and kill hundreds of Knights Templar across the country. The Knights Templar were a powerful religiousgroup that had become very wealthy during the Crusades.

The attack was planned carefully. On the same day, soldiers arrested the Knights Templar in cities across France. Many were tortured and burned alive. The king took all their money and property. This event destroyed one of the most powerful groups in medieval Europe, and may be why people first started thinking Friday the 13th was unlucky.

Buckingham Palace Bombed (1940)

During World War II, on September 13, 1940, German planes dropped bombs on Buckingham Palace in London. The royal family was inside the palace when the bombs hit. This attack was part of Germany's plan to scare the British people and break their spirit during the war. The bombing caused serious damage to the palace, but luckily, the royal family was not hurt.

Two Plane Crashes on the Same Day (1972)

October 13, 1972, saw two terrible plane crashes that killed many people. The first was Uruguayan Flight 571, which crashed in the Andes Mountains while flying to Chile. The second was Aeroflot Flight 217 in Russia, where all 174 people on board died.

The Uruguayan crash became famous because the survivors had to eat the bodies of dead passengers to stay alive in the mountains. Rescue teams stopped looking for them, but two survivors walked through dangerous mountain paths to get help. They saved the remaining people after months in the snow.

Worst Natural Disaster in History (1970)

The Bhola cyclone hit Bangladesh on November 13, 1970, killing between 150,000 and 550,000 people. This makes it one of the deadliest natural disasters ever recorded. The storm brought massive flooding and winds that destroyed entire communities.

Bangladesh was controlled by Pakistan at this time. People became so angry about the bad help that it led to a war. Bangladesh fought for independence and won, becoming its own country.

Australian Bushfires (1939)

On January 13, 1939, massive fires spread across Victoria, Australia. These fires killed 71 people and burned down almost 1,300 buildings. The fires were so bad that they affected three-quarters of the entire state. People called them the ‘Black Friday fires’ because they happened on Friday the 13th.

Cruise Ship Disaster (2012)

The cruise ship Costa Concordia sank on January 13, 2012, after hitting rocks near Italy. This ship was bigger than the famous Titanic and had twice as many people on board. The captain abandoned the ship before all passengers were rescued, which shocked people around the world. Many people died because the crew was not properly trained for emergencies.

Cold War Spy Plane Mystery (1952)

During the Cold War, a Swedish military plane disappeared on June 13, 1952, while secretly spying on Russia for NATO countries. The plane vanished without a trace. When two rescue planes went looking for it, they were also shot down by Russian forces. This incident, called the Catalina Affair, remained secret for many years.

Murder That Changed Emergency Services (1964)

Kitty Genovese was murdered on March 13, 1964, in her apartment by Winston Mosely. What made this crime especially shocking was that 38 people heard her screaming for help, but nobody called the police or tried to help her. This created a new term in psychology called the ‘bystander effect.’

The murder led to major changes in how emergency services work in America. Public anger about people not helping Kitty pushed the government to create the 911 emergency phone system.

Kansas Floods (July 13, 1951)

On July 13, 1951, Kansas experienced record-breaking rainfall, leading to severe flooding. The disaster caused significant damage and loss of life, with over 2 million acres affected.
