Ratan Tata, one of India’s most respected industrialists and former chairman of the Tata Group, passed away on 9 October 2024 at the age of 86. He was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai due to age-related health issues and spent his last moments there.

He was loved and admired not just for his contributions to India’s economy but also for his kindness toward those who worked for him. His death was a great loss to the nation, and the Governments of Maharashtra and Jharkhand declared a day of mourning in his honour.

Now, details of Ratan Tata’s will have emerged, showing how he left a significant portion of his wealth to his domestic staff, office workers, and even his beloved pet dog, Tito.
Ratan Tata’s Will Decoded: How Much He Left To His Staff, Workers, And More
Ratan Tata’s will, dated 23 February 2022, highlights his generosity towards those who served him for years. He allocated ₹3.5 crore to his home and office staff, including domestic helpers, drivers, and assistants. He also waived off loans given to many of them.
Here’s a breakdown of the key beneficiaries of his will:
- Long-Time Domestic Staff: Employees who worked for Tata for over seven years received ₹15 lakh each, depending on their years of service.
- Part-Time Helpers And Car Cleaners: They were given ₹1 lakh each.
- Cook Rajan Shaw: He received ₹1 crore, which included a ₹51-lakh loan waiver.
- Butler Subbaiah Konar: He was given ₹66 lakh, with a ₹36-lakh loan waiver.
- Secretary Delnaz Gilder: She received ₹10 lakh.
- Driver Raju Leon: He got ₹1.5 lakh, along with an ₹18-lakh loan waiver.
- Executive Assistant Shantanu Naidu: His ₹1-crore MBA loan at Cornell University was written off. Tata specifically instructed in his will:
"I direct my executors that they shall not take any steps to recover the loans (from Shaw, Konar, and Raju Leon), and the same shall not be considered as owing to my estate."
Apart from his domestic staff, Tata also gave money to other employees:
- Hoshi D Malesara (Consultant at Tata Trusts): ₹5 lakh
- Devendar Katamollu (Alibaug Bungalow Caretaker): ₹2 lakh
- Deepti Divakaran (Personal Assistant): ₹1.5 lakh
- Peons Gopal Singh & Pandurang Gurav: ₹50,000 each
- Helper Sarfaraz Deshmukh: ₹2-lakh loan waived
Ratan Tata did not forget his beloved pet dog, Tito, a German Shepherd. He left ₹12 lakh for Tito’s care. The money will be given in quarterly payments of ₹30,000. His cook, Rajan Shaw, is responsible for taking care of the dog.

- A neighbour, Jake Malite, had a ₹23.7-lakh MBA loan waived.
- One-third of his estate (excluding shares and properties) was left to former Taj employee Mohini Dutta.
- His Seychelles land worth ₹85 lakh was given to RNT Associates, a Singapore-based fund.
- His two half-sisters, Shireen and Deanna Jejeebhoy, received one-third of the remaining estate each.
- His friend, Mehli Mistry, inherited his Alibaug bungalow.
- Tata Trusts trustee Darius Khambata was named as an executor of his will.
- Each executor of his will received ₹5 lakh as a token of appreciation for carrying out his final wishes.
