The Brahmastra star Ranbir Kapoor is stepping into his 40th year today, September 28, 2022. The actor, who debuted in the Hindi film industry with the 2007 Sanjay Leela Bhansali film Saawariya, has given several Bollywood box-office hits throughout his 15-year career.
While some of his films performed really well at the box office, there were some that might not perform up to the mark but his portrayal was critically acclaimed. On his 40th birthday, we have curated five films of Kapoor where he has given critically acclaimed roles which have lived with us over the years.
Barfi
Set in the 1970s in Darjeeling and Kolkata, Barfi! narrates the story of Murphy Johnson aka ‘Barfi’ (played by Kapoor), a deaf and mute young boy. The romantic comedy-drama film also stars Priyanka Chopra, and Ileana D’Cruz that not only became the highest-grossing film at the box office in 2012, but Barfi! was also India’s official entry to the 85th Academy Awards for the Best Foreign Language Film in 2013.
Rockstar
In this 2011 musical romantic drama film Rockstar directed by Imtiaz Ali, Kapoor plays a troubled musician. The film follows the journey of an aspiring musician from a humble background to international stardom. The preparations Kapoor took to portray the role such as learning the mannerisms and playing guitar were evident in his intense portrayal of the role and received widespread appreciation.
Tamasha
Kapoor starred in yet another Imitiaz Ali film, the 2015 romantic drama film Tamasha opposite Deepika Padukone. He played the role of Ved Sahni, a man who desires a career in the arts but settles for a life of monotony as an engineer. Though the film did not do well at the box office, it received mixed reviews from critics, and Kapoor was praised for his performance in the film.
"Kapoor is beautifully cast, his trademark mix of assertive theatricality and subtle emotion well suited to the role of a man who seemingly has it all under control, until he doesn’t,” reviewed The Hollywood Reporter.
Sanju
Kapoor portrayed actor Sanjay Dutt in his biographical film Sanju, directed by Rajkumar Hirani, which released in 2018. The film deals with Dutt's troubled relationship with his father, his drug addiction, and his arrest for illegal possession of firearms. To avoid mimicking Dutt, Kapoor interacted extensively with the former and took a month's time to transform himself physically before filming each phase of the actor's life. His portrayal was praised by all.
