India's biggest film star of his time, Rajesh Khanna always made headlines for his affairs and marital life. Not many know that Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia didn't have a smooth married life after exchanging vows back in the year 1973. Though they parted ways, they were never legally separated. Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia stood by each other through thick and thin even when they weren't together. Read on to know their beautiful love story.

When Rajesh Khanna Saw Dimple Kapadia For The First Time

Rajesh Khanna first saw Dimple Kapadia during her first film Bobby opposite Rishi Kapoor. He instantly fell for Dimple who was then reportedly dating co-star Rishi Kapoor. However, the two broke up very soon. When Rajesh Khanna got to know about Dimple's breakup, he proposed to her. Dimple Kapadia was in her teens back then. However, Dimple Kapadia was a fan and she couldn't refuse the proposal.

Marriage And Age Difference

Soon, Rajesh Khanna announced his wedding with Dimple Kapadia and it became the biggest news of the nation. It was the wedding of India's finest actors and it created a lot of buzz. Also because of the age difference between Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia the wedding grabbed a lot of eyeballs. Dimple, who was 16 years old was 15 years younger to her husband Rajesh Khanna. However, the age difference never bothered the two actors. They tied the knot in March 1973.

The two got married and hosted a big reception for all their friends from the industry at Hotel Horizon in Juhu, Mumbai. When they went to Europe for their honeymoon, Rajesh Khanna also hosted a big party for Dimple Kapadia's 16th birthday.

In an interview, Dimple Kapadia talked about getting married to the superstar. She said, " The biggest high for me was to marry Rajesh Khanna. That was high and I don’t think my success was as much of a high as getting married to this superstar. I used to be a big fan of his, it was a dream come true."

Dimple Kapadia was just 16 and she decided to leave Bollywood for the sake of their marriage. On leaving her stardom for marriage, she once in an interview said, "I got married while I was just sixteen. I do not have any regrets for having left the stardom for the sake of my family life. I feel that was my best period."

When Rajesh Khanna's Stardom Started To Fade

A lot of Rajesh Khanna's movies failed to work at the box office in the late 70s and early 80s. He couldn't take the failure and turned into an alcoholic. Though Dimple Kapadia was always by his side through the time, he fell for Tina Munim at that time. During the 80s, Rajesh Khanna and Tina Munim's affair stories started to do rounds.

In an interview, he also admitted that he married Dimple Kapadia to heal from his past breakup and then also had an affair with Tina Munim. He said, "I married Dimple on the rebound and Tina was a balm on my wounds."

This brought Dimple and Rajesh Khanna's relationship to an end. Sometime later the actress also admitted that it was a wrong decision to marry the superstar.

Being Together Even After Separation

Dimple Kapadia and Rajesh Khanna never completed the divorce proceedings as they thought it would have a bad impact on their daughters. Even after separating, they maintained an amicable relationship with each other and were often spotted at different events. They also admitted that even if they aren't together that doesn't mean they don't value or love each other.

In an interview, the superstar accepted that he is still in love with wife Dimple. Dimple, too shared that Rajesh Khanna will always hold a special place in her heart as he is the father of her children.

Dimple Kapadia was there for him during his last days. Rajesh Khanna passed away on 18th July 2012.
