Radha Ashtami honours the birth of Goddess Radha, the devotional beloved to Lord Krishna. As per the Hindu mythology, Radha is revered not just as Krishna’s beloved but also as an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. Legends say she was born to King Vrishabhanu and his wife Keerti. The couple was not blessed with a child for years, then one day King Vrishabhanu finds a baby girl on a lotus in a river. She is adopted by King Vrishabhanu and his wife Keerti and was named Radha.

Radha Ashtami Significance: How It’s Celebrated

• Radha Ashtami highlights the essence of pure, selfless devotion, Radha’s unwavering love for Krishna is considered the greatest example of Bhakti. Celebrations bring alive this devotion with symbolism, music, and reverence.

• In temples and homes, devotees lovingly prepare the idol of Radha for worship. This includes the ritual Abhishekam (ceremonial bathing) with Panchamrit, a mix of milk, ghee, honey, sugar/jaggery, and yoghurt, followed by decorating the idol with fresh flowers, performing Aarti, and offering Bhog.
• Many also observe a fast, either full or partial, to seek blessings for peace, family harmony, and spiritual growth. In places like Barsana and Vrindavan, the atmosphere glows with bhajans, processions, and prayerful sessions.
