Pune Court Notice Asks Women Lawyers Not To Fix Their Hair In Court, Withdraws Later

The District Court of Pune posted a notice requesting that women advocates stop "arranging their hair in open Court," which led social media users to be outraged. The notice, which was tweeted by senior counsel and activist Indira Jaising, said: "It is constantly seen that women advocates are arranging their hair in open Court, which is disturbing the functioning of the Court. Women advocates are hereby advised to avoid such behaviour." Jaising wrote, “Wow now look! Who is distracted by women advocates and why!”

Several netizens shared their views in the comment section of the shared notice. "What an absolutely absurd notice. The extent of patriarchy is absolutely absurd "Ranjona Banerji, a veteran journalist, commented. Another user said “Are women's rights (Constitutional Rights That Safeguard A Woman That You Must Know About) advocates also prohibited if they decide to be distracted tomorrow by the mere presence of women?” The renowned author Mira Kamdar called the letter "unbelievable." Some others pointed out that men always fix their hair in courtrooms.

However, after receiving harsh criticism from social media and numerous sources, the notice was withdrawn. The notice was only issued, according to unnamed Registrar's office employees, to preserve the courtroom's decorum. The officials said that it was removed to "avoid any controversy." The bar association in Pune (Explore The Magnificent Beauty Of Pune) and other legal authorities have not officially responded to the notice so far.
