When Is Pongal 2025?

This year, Pongal begins on January 14, 2025 (Tuesday) and will end on January 17, 2025 (Friday). The festival is celebrated over four days, each dedicated to different rituals and traditions, reflecting the deep agricultural roots of the region and celebrating it with family and friends.  

Pongal History 

Pongal is a vibrant and ancient festival celebrated primarily by the people of South India, especially the Tamils. It is a time to express gratitude to the Sun God, Surya, for the abundance of the harvest. The roots of Pongal date back to the Sangam period and are deeply intertwined with Hindu mythology.

One of the legends connected to this festival is the story of Lord Krishna and Lord Indra. It is said that Lord Krishna protected the villagers of Gokul from a destructive storm sent by Lord Indra by lifting the mighty Govardhan Hill on his finger to shield them. 

Another legend is about Lord Shiva and his bull, Nandi. As the story goes, Lord Shiva cursed Nandi and sent him to Earth, where he was tasked with helping humans grow enough food to sustain themselves.

Pongal, dedicated to Surya, the Sun God, is celebrated at the same time as Makar Sankranti, a harvest festival that is observed across India, though it goes by different names in various regions. This festival is a joyful occasion to honor nature, the Sun, and the hard work of farmers.

The Four Days of Pongal

Each day of the festival carries its own importance and cultural significance.

• Bhogi Pongal (January 14, 2025): The first day is all about cleaning up and letting go of the old. People discard old and unwanted items, symbolizing a fresh start and welcoming positivity for the new year.
• Thai Pongal or Surya Pongal (January 15, 2025):  This is the main day of the festival, dedicated to the Sun God. “Thai Pongal also marks the beginning of the Tamil auspicious month, Thai as per the Tamil solar calendar”, as stated by the Tamil Nadu Tourism portal. This day represents the gratitude people feel for the Sun's role in helping their crops grow. 
• Mattu Pongal (January 16, 2025): The third day is dedicated to cattle, which are essential for plowing fields. Farmers decorate their animals with bright colours and garlands, and they are often given special treats. 
• Kaanum Pongal (January 17, 2025): The final day is for family celebrations and reunions. It’s a day to visit relatives and friends, exchange gifts, and enjoy feasts together. People visit Pongal Mela and enjoy the traditional folk dances - Mayilattam and Kolattam which are especially performed on this day.
