National Cancer Awareness Day History
The history of National Cancer Awareness Day dates back to 2014 when the Government of India officially declared November 7th as a day to increase public awareness about cancer and its preventive measures. This initiative was launched under the leadership of Union Health Minister and Family Welfare, Dr. Harsh Vardhan.
According to the Press Information Bureau, the minister announced that “A specific day in a year will be dedicated to awareness building on a particular disease. For instance, November 7 will be observed as National Cancer Awareness Day, apart from February 4 which is already marked as World Cancer Day. We will use such occasions to communicate with citizens on how to deal with that disease at the prevention and curative levels, the importance of timely check-ups, and other matters.”
The observance of National Cancer Awareness Day aims to shift the focus from treatment to prevention and early detection, emphasising the need to educate people about the various lifestyle choices that contribute to cancer risks, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, poor diet, and lack of physical activity.

National Cancer Awareness Significance
National Cancer Awareness Day holds great significance, especially in countries like India, where cancer rates have been rising steadily. A report from the World Health Organisation points out that many cancer cases are found at later stages when treatment options are fewer and the chances of survival are lower.
According to theNational Institute of Health report, it states, “The estimated number of incident cases of cancer in India for the year 2022 was found to be 14,61,427 (crude rate:100.4 per 100,000). In India, one in nine people is likely to develop cancer in his/her lifetime. Lung and breast cancers were the leading sites of cancer in males and females, respectively. Among the childhood (0-14 yr) cancers, lymphoid leukaemia (boys: 29.2% and girls: 24.2%) was the leading site. The incidence of cancer cases is estimated to increase by 12.8 per cent in 2025 as compared to 2020.”
One of the key goals of National Cancer Awareness Day is to encourage people to participate in regular screenings and check-ups. Early detection of cancer significantly increases the chances of successful treatment and recovery. Dr Bhavna Bansal Senior Consultant and HOD, Histopathology Oncquest Laboratories says, “This day aims to empower individuals with knowledge about symptoms, factors responsible for the growing number of cases, and the critical importance of regular health screenings, which can detect cancers at a treatable, early stage. When diagnosed early, the disease’s progression can be slowed or halted, making treatment far more effective and less invasive.”
She further emphasises the need for campaigns and programs to focus on improving the healthcare infrastructure for cancer treatment in the country. She shares, “Awareness campaigns, accessible screening facilities, and public health education play pivotal roles in bridging the knowledge gap. Through initiatives like National Cancer Awareness Day, India continues to make strides toward reducing cancer-related mortality, enabling people to take proactive steps in securing their health and well-being.”
As cancer rates continue to rise globally, this day reminds everyone that with awareness, timely intervention, and a commitment to healthier lifestyles, cancer can be managed and even prevented in many cases. By raising awareness, we can all play a role in the global fight against cancer.
