Around 13 people have lost their lives, and two others are in critical condition following a ferry capsizing off the coast of Mumbai on the evening of December 18, 2024, as confirmed by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The incident occurred around 3:55 pm when a passenger vessel named Neelkamal overturned in the sea after colliding with a Navy boat.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis shared details about the tragedy on Twitter, writing, "The accident involving a passenger boat from Neelkamal Company in the Arabian Sea near Mumbai is deeply tragic and unfortunate. According to information provided by Navy’s Vice Admiral Sanjay Jagjit Singh, 13 people have been confirmed dead by Navy doctors, including 10 civilians and 3 Navy personnel.”

As per the information received till 7:30 pm, 101 passengers have been safely rescued.

He further wrote, “My heartfelt tributes to the deceased. We stand in full solidarity with the grieving families during this difficult time. Two injured passengers are receiving treatment at the Navy hospital, and I pray for their swift recovery."
The Chief Minister announced that an ex-gratia of Rs five lakh would be provided from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to the families of those who tragically lost their lives in the accident.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences for the deaths in the Mumbai ferry accident on the social media platform X and announced an ex-gratia of ₹two lakh to the next of kin of the deceased through the PM National Relief Fund. He also declared that ₹50,000 would be given to those injured in the tragic accident.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Navy clarified that the collision happened when an Indian Navy craft lost control during engine trials in Mumbai Harbour due to an engine malfunction, leading to the tragic death of 13 people. According to the Navy, 99 survivors have been rescued so far.

The Indian Navy stated, as reported by ANI, “Search and rescue operations were promptly initiated, involving four naval helicopters, 11 naval crafts, one Coast Guard boat, and three marine police crafts to recover survivors.”

Mumbai Ferry Tragedy: Survivors Recall Horror
Survivors shared their harrowing accounts of the moments leading up to the tragedy and the negligence that contributed to the loss of so many lives. One survivor, who was travelling with his aunt and cousin to Elephanta Island, recounted the lack of safety measures on the boat.
“No one on the boat had life jackets. After the collision, we pulled several people out of the water and onto the boat. About 20-25 minutes later, the Navy rescued us, but by then, we had lost my aunt,” said Gautam Gupta, a resident of Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, as reported by Business Today.

Arif Bamane, a driver for the Mumbai Port Trust (MBPT) pilot boat Poorva, told news agency PTI that when they arrived at the scene, the situation was both tragic and chaotic. He described the scene saying, "People were screaming and crying for help."
