Monsoon is finally here offering us respite from the heatwave and sweaty days. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, it is advancing swiftly across the country.
On Monday, an orange alert was issued in the capital New Delhi. It will be under yellow alert for Tuesday and Wednesday. According to the IMD’s forecast, light to moderate rain and thundershowers are expected in NCR, while the majority of the upcoming days are expected to remain cloudy.
The department has also said that Mumbai and coastal parts of Maharashtra can expect heavy rainfall. According to predictions, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh can expect isolated heavy and very heavy rainfall until June 28, 2023.
According to the Press Trust Of India (PTI), the Kachchh region of Gujarat is experiencing cyclonic circulation, while the Bay of Bengal is under low pressure. Therefore, parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka are likely to experience very heavy rainfall in the next two days.
We all have heard all these colour-coded warnings before, however, we hardly know what they mean. Here is a breakdown of all colours and what they mean.
Green
The green colour signifies that all is well in an area. In such cases, no advisories are issued.
Yellow
When the IMD sends a yellow alert for any city or state, it is trying to convey to people to be wary in case they are planning a vacation or going around nearby water bodies. The alert is the department’s way of conveying that severely bad weather can be expected for a few days, therefore, locals and tourists should plan accordingly. It also means that the weather could change for the worse and cause disruption to everyday activities.
Depending on the season, one can expect a hot day, hailstorm, and fog.
Orange
Orange or Amber alert refers to being prepared for extremely bad weather. When the department issues it for any city, they are trying to tell people that they can expect disruption in commuting. In such cases, you should always check the traffic (Car Driving Tips For Beginners), flight delays, and interruptions in railways. Many cities can even expect power cuts.
When an orange alert is issued, people can expect warm nights and dust storms as well.

Red
If the IMD has issued a red alert for a city or state, it means the conditions have deteriorated. It usually means that tourists should avoid travelling to such areas because it can pose a significant risk to their life.
The red warning also means ground frost, dust-raising winds, cold days, strong surface winds, and thunderstorms and lightning.
The IMD issues similar warnings for flood-affected areas depending on the water level. If you are planning to travel to Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, you should pick other destinations because flash floods have created havoc in parts of these states. Jammu Kashmir highway is also blocked due to heavy rains. Many parts of hill stations have been witnessing landslides too.
