Imagine walking into a nursery, hospital, or classroom, and being greeted by a male caregiver, nurse, or teacher. Believe it or not, this scenario may still seem unconventional to many. Well, the reality is that today’s generation is increasingly breaking free from traditional gender roles and pursuing careers in the fields they like irrespective of gender domination.Pothen Jacob, Partner and Principal Consultant at Interweave Consulting, shared his experience, expertise, and some thoughts with us in a discussion on men working in women-dominated career fields.

Breaking The Barriers

Jacob said, "In the corporate world, certain roles have lowwng been associated with specific genders, shaping perceptions of who belongs and who doesn’t. For men stepping into roles traditionally dominated by women, such as those focused on caregiving, collaboration, or engagement, the challenges are subtle yet persistent. The barriers they face often mirror the struggles women encounter in male-dominated fields but with their unique dynamics."

Breaking The Barriers

"Men entering these spaces often find themselves under a quiet but constant scrutiny. Their choice to pursue such roles can prompt questions—sometimes direct, often implied—about their motives or fit. “Why would a man choose this?” is a sentiment that echoes in casual remarks or quiet assumptions, leaving an undercurrent of doubt that must be constantly navigated," he added.

Experience And Challenges

"The day-to-day experience for men in these roles often includes a sense of isolation. Being one of the few—or the only—men in the room can lead to feelings of being an outsider. Conversations may veer into areas that make them acutely aware of their difference, and social connections, though supportive, may feel incomplete. The isolation isn’t intentional but becomes a persistent reminder of their minority status," mentioned Pothen.

He continued, "This isolation is compounded by stereotypes that cast a long shadow over their work. Men in traditionally female-dominated roles are often expected to embody traits like dominance or assertiveness, traits that can clash with the collaborative and empathetic nature of these jobs. The pressure to conform to societal expectations of masculinity creates an exhausting balancing act, where they must prove their competence while navigating the dissonance between perception and reality."

"Complicating matters further, the growing focus on gender diversity metrics in organisations sometimes unintentionally reinforces these stereotypes. Diversity efforts, while necessary, often target quick wins by increasing female representation in roles already dominated by women. These roles, associated with nurturing or communication, become the focal point of diversity strategies, leaving men in these spaces feeling overlooked or undervalued," he pointed out.

Experience And Challenges

Jacob said, "The impact of these dynamics isn’t just professional—it’s deeply personal. Men in these roles often push themselves harder, striving to prove they belong. They take on additional responsibilities, overprepare, or volunteer for tasks beyond their scope, all in an effort to silence the unspoken doubts of others—and themselves. The mental toll can manifest as stress, burnout, or a lingering sense of inadequacy, despite their competence and achievements."

"The focus on diversity metrics, while well-intentioned, can exacerbate these challenges. When organizations prioritise numbers over culture, they risk perpetuating the very stereotypes they aim to dismantle. Filling traditionally female roles with women may improve representation on paper, but it reinforces the idea that these spaces are inherently gendered. This creates silos where men are hesitant to enter, and women are confined to roles they’ve been historically associated with," he added.

True Inclusion

Jacob expressed, "The path to true inclusion requires organisations to rethink their approach. Diversity initiatives must go beyond the surface level, addressing the cultural barriers that shape how roles are perceived. Instead of focusing solely on representation, efforts should aim to dismantle the stereotypes that keep certain jobs associated with one gender."

"Building such an environment requires more than policy changes. It involves fostering open conversations about the biases that shape workplace dynamics. Encouraging discussions about masculinity and femininity can help challenge traditional notions of who belongs where. Highlighting diverse role models—both men and women—who have succeeded in breaking these moulds can inspire others to follow," he further said.

Pothen concluded, "Ultimately, the journey to dismantle these barriers is about more than fixing numbers or checking boxes. It’s about fostering workplaces where individuals are valued for their skills, contributions, and potential, regardless of gender. By challenging stereotypes, rethinking diversity strategies, and building supportive cultures, organisations can move closer to achieving true equity. In this evolving landscape, the goal isn’t just to break ceilings or open doors. It’s to create a workplace where every individual feels they belong—where roles aren’t defined by gender, but by the passion and expertise of the people who fill them. True inclusion means ensuring that everyone, no matter their path, has an equal chance to thrive."
