Renowned auctioneer Mallika Sagar had a tough time on November 24, during the opening day of the IPL 2024 mega auction. She reportedly made several critical errors, leading to financial losses for the Gujarat Titans (GT) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). These mistakes disrupted the teams' carefully crafted auction strategies.
Adding to the unprecedented nature of IPL 202, Mallika Sagar takes the spotlight as the first female auctioneer in the league's 16-year history, wielding the gavel with distinction. Below, we take a closer look at Mallika Sagar and discover more interesting details about her.
Who Is Mallika Sagar?
Mallika Sagar, a notable presence in the art scene, completed her major in art history at Bryn Mawr College in Philadelphia. Residing in Mumbai, she wears multiple hats as an art collector, and consultant, and holds a deep passion for Indian art. The auctioneer serves as a partner at the Art India consultants firm and has actively participated in numerous auctions with Pundoles, a notable art gallery based in Mumbai.
Making waves in the auction arena, Mallika has impressively overseen the Women's Premier League (WPL) auctions on two consecutive occasions. Her groundbreaking journey as the inaugural female auctioneer began in 2001 at Christie’s, a prestigious British auction house.
Even though Mallika's recent venture into cricket with the WPL auction was her debut in the sport, she is no stranger to sports auctions. In a historic feat, Mallika had already made waves as the first female auctioneer in league history, overseeing the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) auction in 2021, thereby breaking barriers and leaving an indelible mark in the sports auction landscape.
Mallika Sagar Takes Over Hugh Edmeades Post As Auctioneer
Mallika Sagar, who recently led the Women's Premier League auction as the gavel master, is set to take over from Hugh Edmeades, according to sources confirmed by Sportstar. Hugh Edmeades has held the position of IPL auctioneer since 2018, succeeding Richard Madley. In a significant development, Mallika steps into this role following Edmeades' incident during last year's auction in Bengaluru, where he collapsed due to "postural hypotension." Despite her cricket auction debut in the WPL, Mallika brings prior experience in sports auctions, having made history as the first female auctioneer in the Pro Kabaddi League's auction in 2021. Her adept auctioneering skills in the WPL have garnered appreciation from various quarters.
