Runaway Bride: Madhya Pradesh Woman Elopes With Priest Who Officiated Her Wedding

In a bizarre turn of events, a bride from Madhya Pradesh ran away with the priest who had officiated her wedding barely two weeks back. According to reports, the incident, which seems to resemble a Bollywood masala flick’s plot twist, took place in Tori Bagrod, Sironj city of Madhya Pradesh. It turns out, that while people were hooked on to their television sets on May 23, for the results of Lok Sabha elections 2019, the unlikely couple made their escape.

Vinod Maharaj, the priest, who had performed the rituals of the woman’s marriage on May 7, had to officiate another wedding in the same locality on May 23. However, he was nowhere to be found.

When the people of Tori started looking for the absent priest, they discovered that the 21-year-old woman was also missing. Based on a complaint by the woman’s relative, the police began investigating and discovered that the woman and the holy man were in a romantic relationship for the past two years. Interestingly, the priest was already married with two children. The family too was absconding.

A media report said that the woman eloped with jewellery worth Rs 1.5 lakh and Rs 30,000 in cash. 

The woman was married to a man from Asath village and had returned to her mother’s house three days after the wedding, as per customs.
