The most vulnerable road users, aside from pedestrians and riders of two-wheelers, are often considered to be bicycle riders. According to government statistics, a significant portion of all traffic deaths are caused by bikers.
In one such tragic road accident that took place on the foggy evening of Christmas 2022 in Lucknow’s Aminabad, Khushi Pandey lost her maternal grandfather. Following this tragic incident the 22-year-old girl decided to voluntarily equip all bicycles in the city with a bike light.
“My Nana was returning from Aminabad on Christmas eve. when he had a fatal accident. He was riding cycle when a vehicle crashed into him. He died on the spot. I am helping so many people in the society but the fact that I could not help my Nana made me sad,” said Pandey.

She added that the experience inspired the idea to install bike lights on city bicycles so that they can be seen in foggy conditions.
Regarding the installations, Pandey said, “We did our first installation on January 13, 2023 and equipped scores of cycles. I was unaware that I would get such a good response from the public. We have so far installed over 500 bike lights in cycles in the city. A lot of people are requesting me to continue this initiative in different parts of the city.”
“I am working on limited funds. I’ll be glad if I can get some financial assistance from corporations so that we can expand our social service in different cities. Cyclists are prone to accidents and we are here to help them. I would request corporate or even stakeholders in the government to extend us some financial assistance,” said Pandey.
Data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways Statistics in 2015 indicates that 46.3% of all accidents involve bikers. Almost half of all traffic fatalities worldwide occur to motorcyclists, cyclists, and pedestrians, as per another Global Road Safety 2015 analysis by SaveLIFE Foundation analysis.
