Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak are all over the news because they have been contesting to succeed Boris Johnson as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Defeating Sunak, Liz Truss has won the election to become the new Prime Minister of Britain, the third woman in history to do so.

Truss’s full name is Mary Elizabeth Truss. She is a British politician currently holding the office of the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs. She has been the Minister for Women and Equalities since 2019.

The 47-year-old member of the Conservative Party has served many positions in the cabinet of former Prime Ministers David Cameron, Theresa May, and Boris Johnson.

Born in England, Truss has lived in Scotland and Canada. She graduated from Merton College, Oxford, in 1996.

She was the president of Oxford University Liberal Democrats and supported the legalisation of cannabis and campaigned against Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994.

In 1999, Truss qualified as a Chartered Management Accountant (ACMA). She climbed up the corporate ladder at Cable & Wireless, a British telecommunications company, to become its economic director.

Later, she co-authored Fit For Purpose, The Value of Mathematics, Back to Black: Budget 2009 Paper, A New Level and other reports.

Truss started her political career in 2001 when she contested for the constituency of Hemsworth in West Yorkshire. Although she did not win, the Conservative party saw its votes rise by 4%.

Under David Cameron, she became one of the party’s most crucial members. In 2009, she won the South West Norfolk seat by more than 50% of the votes cast in her favour.

In 2011, she wrote many papers and campaigned for improving teaching methods in school subjects like Maths. In 2012, Truss held the office of Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Education.

Later, she also outlined programmes to reform childcare in England. Many organisations welcomed her proposals.

In 2014, Truss rose to become the Secretary of State of Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs. She favoured climate activists and said that ‘human beings have contributed to climate change.

In 2015, she was one among only two cabinet members who voted against the proposal for introducing plain packaging for cigarettes. In 2016, Truss became the Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor in Theresa May’s first ministry.

During the general elections of 2017, Truss was appointed to the position of Chief Secretary to the Treasury. After holding many other positions in between, the Conservative leader was appointed as the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs.

Results of the 2022 elections are pending, and according to reports, Truss is ahead of Rishi Sunak. She is about to become the third woman prime minister in Britain.
