Who Is Kunchacko Boban?
Boban, who debuted as a child artist in the 1981 Malayalam film Dhanya, produced by his father, returned as a lead in the 1997 Malayalam film Aniyathipraavu directed by Fazil. It became one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films that year. He went on to establish a “romantic hero” image for himself in the Malayalam film industry with back-to-back box office hits. But his career took a stumble in the mid-2000s. After a brief break, he came back with the 2009 comedy film Gulumal: The Escape, which became a commercial success. Following this, Boban broke his chocolate boy romantic hero image and began doing a wide variety of roles and reestablished himself as one of the popular leads in the evolving Malayalam film industry.
“I was at the peak of my career when I was in my twenties. I played roles which required me to roam around on a stylish motorbike, dance to romantic tunes… I took a break from cinema when I finally got tired of it,” Boban said in an interview. He further added, “When I finally returned to cinema, I was determined to choose roles more wisely. I wanted to reinvent myself as an actor. Not as a star. It’s paying off. Now I play smaller roles – character roles, and those with negative shades. This part of my career is more creatively satisfying. Age isn’t a barrier for the actor that I am. I have already tamed my age.”

After his critically acclaimed role in the 2011 thriller film Traffic, Boban won the SIIMA Awards for Best Actor in a Negative Role for Seniors. This was Boban’s first foray into playing a darker role, breaking away from his romantic hero past.
With several box-office hits and critically acclaimed films since then, the year 2021 began with three films Boban – Nayattu, Nayanthara starrer Nizhal, and Mohan Kumar Fans. Boban delivered one of his finest performances in Nayattu, which was shortlisted for India's selection for the Best International film at the 94th Academy Awards. Now Boban’s Ariyippu has been selected for screening at the 27th Busan Film Festival this year.
