It's been a couple of months since I made it to the world of K-dramas. I have to be honest, Korean dramas are addictive, days pass and you begin to feel guilty for being glued to your couch for way too many hours. But in the end, you just don't wish to step out of it. However, I somehow managed to make good use of it. How?
I started picking up common Korean words and phrases. Along with the entertainment Korean dramas serve you, they can also be a platform for you to delve into the Korean language and culture. While you are watching your favourite K-dramas, you can learn a new language, just the perfect way for beginners.
So, I thought of bringing you some common Korean words and phrases I learned from my favourite Korean dramas.
Sa-rang-hae
You must have heard this one way too many times, especially in those romantic K-dramas. 'Sa-rang-hae' means I love you.
Oppa
Interestingly, this one word has two different meanings. It means an older man or brother and it also means a boyfriend or husband. The pronunciation is easy, 'op-pa'.
Unni
'Unni' in Korean means older sister. It is pronounced like it is spelled.
Gamsahamnida
While there are many ways to say thank you in Korean, this one is the easiest. 'Kam-sa-ham-nida' is a common phrase meaning thank you. This one should be said while nodding the head which conveys that you are showing respect to the other person.
Annyeonghaseyo
This one is another basic. A way to greet each other, 'Ann-yeong-haseyo'. This is said while slightly bowing down the head.
Jeogiyo
You must have spotted your favourite Korean drama actors using this word to get the attention of someone. 'Jeo-giyo' means excuse me.
