After a thumping majority, Narendra Modi is set to be the Prime Minister of the country for a second consecutive term. With the win, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has created a record of being the first incumbent PM in 48 years to be voted to power again with a majority.
After Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, PM Modi becomes the third prime minister of the country who has been able to retain power for a second term with a whopping majority in the Lok Sabha.
In the recently concluded general election, women and men turned up in equal numbers to exercise their franchise. The polls saw a turnout of 67 percent, which was way higher than the previous national polls and going by the numbers, women voters played a pivotal role in BJP's victory in 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The turnout among women was higher than men, strengthening vote share of NDA. Women are pinning hope that the Narendra Modi led BJP government at the Centre that has done a lot for them in its last term will continue to do its good work in its this five-year governance too. We share with you some of the expectations by women from the Narendra Modi led government.
Women's Safety
Women's safety has been a concern for all the governments that have been voted to power in the country since its Independence. The last few years have seen women's safety getting much more attention, but in the country where half the population is women, things need to improve at a rapid pace. A number of researches have shown that only 25 per cent women feel safe walking on streets, while 44.6 per cent feel unsafe and 30.5 per cent are neutral about it.
Employment For Women
After being voted to power in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that women are not just homemakers but nation builders. Women are the sole bread earner many families in and with the weakening employment scenario in the country, they seek far better job prospects from the government. In India, the women in the workforce statistics have dipped to 26.7 per cent in 2018 from 35 per cent in 2005.
Toilets, Hygiene And Health
The flagship campaign of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, has received mixed results from people. However, countrymen think that the campaign holds a lot of promise. The Modi government has said that in the last four years, over nine crore toilets have been built and over 4.5 lakh villages have been declared open defecation free. But access to toilets does not mean open defecation has ended. Women are the major beneficiaries of any change on this front because it impacts them and directly involves them. Women are pinning hope from the new government that it will build on this and use Nari Shakti to make it widespread through behavioural change.

Women In Politics
We have been well aware of the pivotal role played by women in the field of politics. From the freedom movement to Independence, women have played a crucial role in politics. But when it comes to the percentage of women in politics, the figures are really apologetic. India stands at the 141th position amongst 193 countries when we talk about women's active participation in the country's politics. Around 86.8 per cent of women thought women reservation bill will improve the number of women representatives in parliament while 31.2 percent still feel that it wouldn’t bring the desired change.
Beti Bachao Beti Padhao
In order to reverse the trend of declining child sex ratio and to highlight the importance of education and empowerment of women, the Narendra Modi government launched Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme in January 2015. The scheme aims to not only help in creating awareness about the importance of protecting the girl child but also, help focus on their education so that they can meet their aspirations. The flagship scheme of the Modi government has received criticism for being more publicity less positive. It is because girls join primary schools, but fail to continue with studies for long or sustain through the classes.
According to the statistics released by the census of 2011, India’s female literacy rate is 65.46 per cent, significantly lower than the world average of 79.7 percent. Women are expecting that in the coming days more young women would enroll themselves to schools and complete their education.
Ujjwala Yojana
To bring a smile on the faces of women from poor families, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led BJP government launched Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana scheme on May 1, 2015. The scheme aims at replacing the hazardous chullas with LPG connections. It is done keeping in view the health conditions of women who cook food on chullas. The government has said it provided for 8 crore connections and women directly benefit from this.
