International Women in Music Day which is annually observed on March 28 celebrates the talented women who have so much to offer in the music industry. When talking about the significant contributions, the Khurana Sisters of Mumbai deserve a noteworthy mention. Kamakshi and Vishala Khurana are Indian classical singers and the founder of ‘The Sound Space on Wheels’ initiative that aims to bring music to the doorsteps of unprivileged kids of Mumbai.
Sound Space on Wheels is a yellow-coloured bus with a brightly lit classroom inside. The bus navigates the slums of Mumbai offering free music classes to children living there twice a week.

During a conversation with HerZindagi, the Khurana sisters talked about the inspiration behind the initiative. “The inspiration for Sound Space on Wheels came from our belief in the transformative power of music. Growing up surrounded by music, we experienced firsthand how it nurtures emotional and intellectual growth. When we saw children in underserved communities being deprived of this opportunity, we knew we had to act. By converting a bus into a mobile music school, we brought learning directly to these communities, eliminating barriers to arts education,” they said.
The sisters have touched the lives of over 5,000 children across various communities in Mumbai through workshops, classes, and performances.
Overcoming Challenges

Opening up about the challenges faced while providing music classes in communities, Kamakshi said, “One major challenge was building trust within the communities. Parents were initially sceptical about the value of music education. To address this, we engaged them through community events and showcased the progress their children were making. Seeing the joy and growth in their children convinced them of the program’s value. Infrastructure was another challenge. With limited space and resources, traditional music classes weren’t feasible. The bus, equipped with instruments and teaching materials, allowed us to overcome this and provide a consistent learning experience.”

Great initiatives like these bring some great lessons. Talking about the learnings achieved from ‘Sound Space on Wheels, Vishala said, “The most profound lesson has been the resilience and enthusiasm of the children we work with. Their eagerness to learn, despite difficult circumstances, continues to inspire us. It has reinforced our belief that opportunity can unlock immense potential. We’ve also learned the power of collaboration. Strong community partnerships have been instrumental in sustaining and expanding our reach. It takes a network of support to create lasting impact.”

We also aspire to introduce advanced training programs for talented students, provide scholarships, and create performance opportunities. Furthermore, we aim to integrate music more holistically into education systems. By advocating for the inclusion of arts education in mainstream curricula, we hope to ensure every child has the chance to experience the joy and growth that music brings. We remain committed to making music accessible to all and are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead,” Vishala and Kamakshi talked about their future goals.
