Jhulan Goswami, the former Indian captain of the National Women’s Cricket team, is all set to play her last match of her two-decade-long career on Saturday, September 24, 2022. The cricket will be retiring officially after the final match of the ongoing three-game One Day International (ODI) series at the Lord’s cricket ground against England.

Goswami, who began her career in 2002 against England with which she is ending it as well, confirmed her retirement officially on September 23, 2022. However, she has retired from international cricket while keeping options open for the much rumoured women’s IPL (Indian Premiere League). “At this moment, I am ending my career in international cricket. I have enjoyed every time,” she said during the official announcement.

“As of now, I haven't decided because so far, the Women's IPL has not been officially announced. We are hopeful that it might come in the coming season. Let's wait for the official announcement and then I will decide,” she added.

The 39-year-old pacer and one of the greatest women fast bowlers of all time was born in a middle-class family in Chakdaha in the Nadia district of West Bengal. At the age of 15, Goswami took up cricket which needed her to travel to Kolkata due to the lack of facilities in Chakdaha. She made her debut in international cricket at the age of 19. Goswami helped the Indian Women’s Cricket team to get their first victory against England, making a 50 while taking her career-best match figures.

In 2007, Goswami won the International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s Cricketer of the Year when no Indian male cricketer had bagged an individual award. A year later, in 2008, she took over the captaincy from Mithali Raj and held the position till 2011. In the same year, she also became the fourth woman to reach 100 wickets in ODIs at the Asia Cup and went on to lead India in 25 ODIs. Later in 2010, Goswami was honoured with the Arjuna Award and in 2012 she became the second Indian woman cricketer to receive the Padma Shri award after former Indian test cricketer Diana Edulji.

Throughout her 20-year-long cricket career, Goswami has 271 international wickets in 223 games and has scored 1593 runs with three 50s and became the highest wicket-taker with 200 wickets in her name in ODIs breaking Australian Cathryn Fitzpatrick's record of 180 wickets. However, under her captaincy, India failed to win the World Cup twice after losing in the finals in 2005 and 2017 against Australia and England respectively.

Goswami said she is retiring with only one regret of not winning a world cup in her career. “Regrets in the sense, (I) played in two World Cup finals (and) if we had won one of them that would’ve been great for us because it is the ultimate goal for us," said Jhulan Goswami. "That’s one such regret I have, otherwise, everything else is great."
