This year saw several popular interviews by veteran actor and talk show host Simi Garewal resurface on the internet. From veteran actor-turned-politician Jaya Bachchan to Sushmita Sen, several Rendezvous interviews went viral after almost three decades since the show premiered.
The actor, who was one of the most prominent stars in the 60s and 80s, and appeared in National award-winning films like Mrinal Sen’s Padatik, later hosted a talk show titled Rendezvous With Simi Garewal in 1997. It was a celebrity talk show, which was very different from filmmaker Karan Johar’s Koffee With Karan. Garewal’s questions were not limited to merely their love and sex life, crushes, and film promotions but gave an insight into who the stars were. Not that sex or relationships never came up, but Garewal gave us very real telling glimpses into the stars’ lives.

Jaya Bachchan-Amitabh Bachchan
In the clip, Garewal asked Jaya if Amitabh is a romantic, to which Jaya responds, “Not to me.” Amitabh asked Garewal if by romantic means “going down on the knees and proposing” and Jaya emphasised that she was talking about “flowers and wine”. Jaya further continues, “Maybe if he had a girlfriend he would do it, but I don’t think.” Garewal then asks if he was romantic when the two were dating to which Jaya responded, “He never spoke” and Amitabh said “It's (talking) a waste of time.”

Rekha
As Garewal asked Rekha about remarriage, the latter shrugged at the former’s opinion of a woman being able to marry only a man. Garewal asked her if she would ever marry again, Rekha countered, “To a man?” and Garewal went on, “Well, not a woman obviously.” To which Rekha responds, “Why not?” She further added, “In my mind, I am married to myself, my profession, and my loved ones. I am not a cynical person.”

Further into the conversation, Garewal speaks about a man giving a sense of security to a woman and said, “If a woman is secure, man has given her the feeling of security.” Disagreeing to this, Rekha pointed out , “Not necessarily, it has got nothing to do with a man. It has to do with the person she is.”
Sharing a video clip of this interview, DietSabya called Rekha a “feminist icon” and a fan commented, “This entire interview was way beyond her time. This woman is very much spiritually awakened.”
Sushmita Sen
With the entire controversy of the actor and former Miss Universe being called a “gold digger” after her alleged relationship with businessman Lalit Modi came to the forefront, her interview with Garewal resurfaced. In the interview, she spoke about adopting her first daughter Renee, her career, and her relationships. Regarding her dating life, she said, “They were all such amazing men, but so wrong for me. I haven’t come close to saying that ‘I’ll walk the aisle with this person’. I’m cautious, as far as long-term commitment goes. There have been times when I could have made a mistake. But something, somewhere has gone wrong. And then I’ve walked away with dignity.” She also mentioned that she had outgrown the “phase” of dating men.

One of the most viral dialogues of her from the interview, where she flaunted a massive diamond ring gifted by her mother, was, “I know it’s kind of intimidating for some men, but I have made it clear. Either you match the size of my diamond or you match the size of my heart. Choose.”
