In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is becoming a sought-after option for those looking to embrace parenthood. Originally developed to help couples struggling with infertility, it has now opened new pathways for the section of society who wish to become parents but do not face any fertility challenges such as single women choosing to embrace parenthood on their own. IVF offers an empowering solution for women wanting to build a family without a partner. It helps break old-age norms, providing hope and opportunity for women to live their dream of motherhood.

To understand the intricacies of IVF for single women, we reached out to our expert Dr Sheetal Jindal-MBBS, MD OBG, EPHM (IIM Kolkata) Senior consultant and medical director_Director Medical Genetics program_Jindal Ivf Chandigarh.

The Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act

“India has made significant strides in supporting single parenthood through IVF. The ART Regulation Bill, passed in 2021, established a clear legal framework for regulating ART services, including IVF. This legislation is crucial as it ensures ethical practices, protects patient rights, and mandates stringent guidelines for all ART procedures. Under this law, single women (including those from the LGBTQ+ community) are legally eligible to undergo IVF treatment,” said Dr Sheetal.

She further added, “the law stipulates that women aged 21 to 50 are allowed to access these services, ensuring informed consent and pre-treatment counselling as mandatory prerequisites. Confidentiality is also prioritised, as the law protects the identities of patients and their medical records. Single women can opt for donor sperm, further broadening the options for those pursuing solo parenthood.”

The IVF Process for Single Parenthood

The IVF process for single women follows similar steps as it does for couples. The course involves egg retrieval, fertilisation with a sperm donor, and embryo transfer to the uterus.
“Throughout this journey, the individual undergoes comprehensive counselling and medical evaluations to ensure emotional and physical readiness for the challenges and joys of single parenthood. IVF empowers single women to pursue motherhood with autonomy, providing a structured and safe approach to conception,” said Dr Sheetal.
