The Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a ten-digit alphanumeric number issued by the Income Tax Department. The PAN is issued by the tax department in laminated form. The tax department uses a person's PAN to identify that individual. Transactions that can be traced with a PAN include tax payments, TDS/TCS credits, income/wealth/gift/FBT returns, defined transactions, correspondence, and so forth.
It is important to keep in mind that each person should only have one PAN card. According to tax rules, it is prohibited to get or hold more than one PAN card, and doing so can result in a punishment of up to Rs 10,000. It also applies to people who have fake PANs. The introduction of QR codes into PAN card IDs started as fraud incidents increased in recent years. All PAN cards created after July 2018 include a QR Code. The QR code created on the PAN card can be used to identify between real and false PAN cards. The Income Tax Department app and a smartphone are all that is needed.
