Lilies are some of the most stunning and fragrant flowers, adding a touch of elegance to any garden. But when winter arrives, with its shorter days and colder temperatures, even the hardiest lilies need a little extra care.
Whether you're growing lilies in the ground or containers, there are a few key things to keep in mind to ensure their survival and next spring's blooms. In this article, some of the necessary tips that you need to know about winter lily care, from protecting them from the cold to watering, take a look:
1. Prepare The Soil
Before the first frost, add a layer of organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure to the soil around the lily bulbs. This will help to insulate the bulbs and provide them with nutrients for the upcoming growing season.
2. Mulch The Bulbs
After adding organic matter, spread a thick layer of mulch around the bulbs. Apply a small coating of compost and then a 2-inch layer of mulch (when required). Also, make sure the mulch should feel moist.
3. Watering Lilies
During winter, lily bulbs go dormant and do not require as much water as they do during the growing season. Water them only when the soil is completely dry, and avoid getting water on the foliage or bulbs, as this can lead to rot. Just when you first plant them, give everything a good watering.
4. Protect From Rodents
Lily bulbs are a favorite food source for rodents such as squirrels and mice during winter. To prevent them from eating your lily bulbs, cover them with a layer of wire mesh or chicken wire before adding mulch.
5. Provide Sunlight
While lilies do not require as much sunlight during the winter, they still need some light to thrive. Place them in a sunny location, preferably with southern exposure, to ensure they receive enough light. If your lilies are planted outdoors, choose a location that receives at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight during the winter months. Potted lilies can be easily moved to adjust their sunlight exposure. Place them near a south-facing window where they can get plenty of bright, indirect sunlight.
