How to Identify Fake Ayurvedic Products in the Market: Expert Tips

Ayurveda’s popularity has surged in recent years, but so has the influx of fake products. According to Dr Partap Chauhan, Senior Ayurvedacharya & Founder, Jiva Ayurveda, these counterfeit items often appear authentic but can be misleading, poorly formulated, or completely unregulated.

“These so-called ‘herbal’ formulations might look Ayurvedic on the outside, but inside? Often misleading, poorly formulated or completely unregulated,” he highlighted.

The result is not just a health risk for consumers but also a blow to the credibility of genuine Ayurveda. Online marketplaces are now full of Ayurvedic oils, powders, and capsules, making big promises but offering little transparency.

How to Identify Fake Ayurvedic Products

Check More Than Just the Label

Many buyers assume that if a product is labelled ‘Ayurvedic’, it is authentic. Dr Chauhan says that is not always the case.

Key things to check include:

• Manufacturer’s name and AYUSH certification
• Valid batch number and manufacturing/expiry dates

Classical formulation names like Triphala or Ashwagandhadi Churna, indicating reference to traditional Ayurvedic texts

Complete ingredient list

Fake products often use vague terms such as ‘natural’ or ‘herbal blend’ without naming the actual ingredients. “If you don’t know what you’re consuming, that’s a red flag,” says Dr Chauhan.

Beware of Exaggerated Claims

Ayurveda works gradually with the body’s natural processes. Products claiming ‘instant weight loss,’ ‘overnight diabetes cure,’ or ‘permanent immunity in one week’ are likely fake.

“In Ayurveda, healing is gradual. Genuine Vaidyas will never make exaggerated or miraculous claims. Neither should a product claiming to be Ayurvedic,” explains Dr Chauhan.

Choose Reputed Brands, Not Just Popular Ones

Social media popularity does not guarantee authenticity. “Being famous on Instagram doesn’t make a product authentic,” says Dr Chauhan.

He advises choosing brands with:

• Years of research and sourcing experience
• Trained Ayurvedic doctors
• Dedicated clinics or traceable treatment history
• ‘If it’s only digital, be a little cautious,’ he adds.

Ayurveda is built on trust, tradition, and time-tested wisdom. “The modern market thrives on speed and shortcuts. As a conscious buyer, your role is important. Look closely. Ask questions. Consult real Ayurvedic doctors before trying any new formulation,” Dr Chauhan advises.
