If your top load washing machine has started to smell musty or isn’t cleaning your clothes like it used to, it’s time for a deep clean. Over time, detergent residue, dirt, and fabric fibres can build up inside the drum, affecting both performance and hygiene. Here's a simple, step-by-step guide to clean your top load washing machine at home using items you likely already have.
You will need:
Set your machine to the longest, hottest wash cycle. As the drum fills, add 3–4 cups of white vinegar directly into the water. Let the machine agitate for a few minutes, then pause it and allow the vinegar water to sit for an hour. This helps loosen residue and kills bacteria.
After an hour, resume the cycle and add about 1 cup of baking soda. Let the machine complete the cycle. The vinegar and baking soda work together to remove grime and odour.
Use your toothbrush and a mixture of warm water and vinegar to scrub the inside rim, detergent drawer, and any crevices where dirt may build up. Wipe down the lid, knobs, and exterior of the machine with a damp microfiber cloth.

If your model has a lint filter or drainage trap, take it out and clean it with warm water and soap. If possible, check the drain pipe for any clogs or build-up.
Once everything is clean, leave the lid open for a few hours. This allows the drum to dry completely and prevents mould or mildew.
