ITR 2024: Here’s How To Check Income Tax Refund Status

If you have filed your Income Tax Return (ITR) in 2024 and are awaiting your tax return, here is how to check ITR refund status. You can also check out the steps to reissue your refund request.

For those who filed their Income Tax Return before July 31, 2024, your return is underway. Out of 7 crore ITRs filed this year, the Income Tax Department of India processed over 5 crore until August 23, 2024. The rest that remains will soon be initiated. Meanwhile, if you are curious about your tax refund, here is how to check ITR refund status at home.

What Is ITR?

An Income Tax Return (ITR) is a document an employed individual submits to the Income Tax Department of India at the end of each financial year. It comprises the individual’s income and the taxes to be paid. The information added to your ITR form only includes the numbers between April 1 and March 31 of the following year.

How Long Does It Take To Process ITR?

It takes between 15 and 45 days to process your Income Tax Returnto the Income Tax Department. However, in special cases, it may extend up to 9 months.

How To Check ITR Refund Status?

If you have filed your ITR, check your tax refund status via the income tax e-filing or TIN NSDL website.

  1. Visit the Income Tax Department’s e-filing website
  2. Log in by entering your user ID, password, and Captcha code
  3. Tap on ‘View Return And Forms’ on the page that appears
  4. Take a screenshot of the data
  5. A drop-down list will appear on your screen
  6. Click on ‘Income Tax Returns’ and the AY (Assessment Year)
  7. Click on submit
  8. Your IT refund status will be displayed on the screen

What To Do If ITR Processing Is Delayed?

If your ITR refund has been credited to your account, here is how you can initiate the process. You can request the department to reconsider your request by following these steps:

  1. Visit the Income Tax Department’s e-filing website (Creating Website)
  2. Log in by entering your credentials
  3. Click on ‘My Account’ followed by ‘Service Request’
  4. A drop-down list will appear, select ‘New Request’
  5. Another drop-down menu will appear, click ‘Refund Reissue’
  6. Select the Assessment Year you are applying for
  7. After filling details, request the reissue of your refund
  8. Click on ‘Submit’
