Lucky bamboo is everyone's favourite housewarming present because it's simple to grow, requires minimal care, and is believed to bring good fortune to a home. These plants often have striking designs, such as spirals, swirls, or braided stalks, making them a common sight in both homes and workplaces, particularly for enhancing feng shui. If you own a lucky bamboo plant, whether at home or in the office, here are some easy tips to help you take care of it.
Bamboo Plant And Chinese Traditions
According to Chinese traditions, as highlighted by The Spruce, the meaning of lucky bamboo is closely linked to the number of stalks in the arrangement. Each specific number of stalks carries its own symbolism. For instance:
- Two stalks symbolise love.
- Three stalks signify Fu (happiness), Lu (wealth), and Soh (long life).
- Five stalks stand for balance, peace, harmony, and power across all aspects of life.
- Six stalks are associated with good fortune and prosperity.
- Seven stalks represent good health.
- Eight stalks indicate growth.
- Nine stalks signify great luck.
- Ten stalks symbolise perfection.
- Twenty-one stalks convey a strong blessing.

It's uncommon to see a traditional lucky bamboo arrangement with four stalks because, in Chinese culture, the word for ‘four’ sounds similar to the word for ‘death.’ Therefore, gifting someone four bamboo stalks would be considered highly inappropriate, as it could be interpreted as wishing death upon them.

How To Care For A Lucky Bamboo Plant
We got in touch with Swaminathan, a local gardener from a nursery in Dwarka, who told us simple steps that you need to keep in mind while taking care of a bamboo plant.
1) Maintain the growing container: Regularly clean the container every few months and replace the water weekly to prevent algae from developing.
2) Provide adequate light: Lucky bamboo thrives as an indoor plant due to its ability to endure light shade and indirect sunlight. However, it will grow more vigorously when exposed to bright light. While it’s not necessary to place your plant in direct sunlight, keeping it in a well-lit room can extend its lifespan.
3) Use filtered water: Lucky bamboo can grow in both soil and water. If you’re growing it in water, using filtered or distilled water is ideal for keeping the roots healthy and moist. Tap water may contain chemicals that could damage the stalks. Always refresh your plant with clean water.

4) Select the appropriate container: When you acquire a lucky bamboo plant, it typically comes in a container with pebbles or beads. If your plant outgrows its original container, it may need to be moved to a larger one. Carefully remove the bamboo, rinse the pebbles, and transfer the plant to the new pot. Replant the roots beneath the pebbles, ensuring they’re fully covered. Keep the water level just high enough to submerge the roots, but avoid letting it touch the stalks.
5) Ensure proper drainage: If your lucky bamboo is planted in soil, make sure the container has adequate drainage. While the plant prefers moist soil, overwatering can harm its growth. Water the plant when the top inch of soil feels dry.
