Harry and Meghan: A Tale of Monarchy, Matrimony, Motherhood, and More

The British Monarchy is an institution that has been synonymous with what it means to be British. The House of Windsor that currently reigns over Britain was established by King George V in 1917 to pacify the anti-German sentiment in England during the aftermath of the first World War. His Royal Highness, Prince Harry and Her Royal Highness Meghan Markle who are the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are senior members of the royal family. Prince Harry is the younger son of King Charles III and Princess Diana and fifth in line to the British throne. And Meghan, coming from a completely different world, had to go through quite some struggle in the capacity of being the spouse of a British royal family member.

The new Netflix documentary, Harry &Meghan is the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's take on their story as it has unfolded on the world stage. Prince Harry has famously compared the trials and tribulations Meghan has gone through to those of his mother, the late Princess Diana. In his words, Meghan embodies the same compassion, empathy and confidence as that of his mother. Sadly, she’s been subjected to critique, scrutiny and tyranny at the hands of the British royal family and the media just like Princess Diana.

Markle, was an American actress essaying the role of Rachel Zane in the drama series, Suits. She was having the perfect summer in 2017 celebrating the spirit of being single, taking a hiatus from work and traveling across Europe with her friends. Just when she thought her life was all figured out, she came across Prince Harry. The Duke saw Markle on a mutual friend’s snapchat and asked who the girl was. Thus, started their journey of finding love, life and companionship.

The couple soon met at a London restaurant and hit it off. They maintained a long-distance relationship which was kept very hush-hush and soon their love blossomed into a fairytale romance.

Meghan has been exposed to large scale racism due to her biracial identity in the mainstream and social media. She has been demonized and dubbed negatively in the process of being a royal. Buckingham Palace always advised the Duchess to ignore the media buzz. However, Prince Harry thought it is pivotal to publish a statement in the media in the interest of protecting his family’s well being and security. The prince has been quoted saying that the media representation of different members of the royal familyis a “dirty game” which resulted in shaking his marriage to the core and leading Meghan to go through a miscarriage.

The couple has moved to the United States and stepped down from active royal duties to build a life of their own for their children, Archie and Lilibet. But the media critique around their lives hasn’t died down. Multiple rounds of tyranny has been perpetrated on the family dubbing Meghan as the anti-hero during her first outing with the late Queen Elizabeth II. Also, with the now Princess of Wales, Kate being unhappy with the treatment of her kids during the Sussex wedding added to it. Buckingham Palace has never made an attempt to protect the Duchess of Sussex, unlike their proactive stance always taken for the Princess of Wales. It paints a dismal picture of the double standards of the monarchy which has led to the Sussexs bidding the monarchy goodbye in the interest of maintaining their sanity and their children.
