As per Hindu mythology, this festival gets its name from the destruction of the demon named Holika, who tried to kill her nephew, Prahlad. She wore a special cape that protected her from getting burnt and then sat in a bonfire and called for her nephew to sit on her lap. Prahlad was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu, so he protected him while Holika burned to death.
