The founder of Sikhism was Guru Nanak Ji, and he went on to become the first Sikh Guru. Born during the 15th century, in 1469, he lived in a time of great inequality and injustice. His birthplace falls in the village of Rai Bhoi Ki Talwandi, now known as Nankana Sahib, in modern-day Pakistan. As Guru Nanak Ji grew up, he had a profound spiritual experience after disappearing in the River Bein for three days. Upon emerging, he declared: "There is no Hindu, there is no Musalman,". His message was clear; it tells us how all humanity is one before a single, universal God (Ek Onkar). Thus emerged the concept of ‘Ek Onkar’.
We celebrate the festival of Guru Nanak Jayanti to not only honour Guru Nanak ji, but to also remember his teachings. Devotees should take this day to learn from all the wisdom passed down through all gurus.
