On Thursday, Google Doodle commemorated the ‘accordion,’ a German musical instrument patented on this date in 1829, affectionately dubbing it the ‘main squeeze’ of folk musicians. This instrument, characterised by its free-reed mechanism and bellows, has left a significant mark on numerous music styles, ranging from pop and jazz to folk and classical genres. Below, we take a closer look at the instrument.
Google Doodle Marks Patent Anniversary Of Musical Instrument Accordion
The Doodle celebrates the 1829 patent of the accordion, a name derived from the German word “akkord,” meaning “chord.” This unique instrument, characterised by its free-reed mechanism, quickly gained popularity among European folk musicians during the late 19th century. Alongside other free-reed instruments with bellows like the concertina, bandoneon, and harmonium, the accordion emerged in the early 1800s. The Doodle depicts the "Google" logo integrated within the bellows of an accordion, with artists dressed in traditional German attire dancing to its tunes.
What Is An Accordion?
An accordion is a portable musical instrument that features a treble section with piano-style keys or buttons and a bass section equipped with buttons, both connected to opposite sides of a manually operated bellows.
According to the explanation provided by Google Doodle, in the late 19th century, German manufacturers increased accordion production to meet the growing demand among European folk musicians. Initially, accordions had buttons on a single side, each producing a full chord. Depending on whether the bellows were pushed or pulled, these buttons could produce two different chords.

The widespread migration of European emigrants globally contributed to the broader adoption of the accordion in various music genres. Modern accordions may have buttons or a piano keyboard, and some models combine both. Some contemporary accordions incorporate electronic components, enabling them to connect to amplifiers or produce synthesised tones.
Today, the accordion is prominent in genres like folk music, Latino polka, tango, and cajun music. It is a fixture at Oktoberfest, a lively event renowned for its carnival atmosphere, music, and traditional attire such as Dirndls and lederhosen.
With its versatility, the accordion continues to play a significant role in German celebrations and music worldwide, maintaining its influence even after two centuries.
Additionally, the Google Doodle highlighted the accordion's ubiquitous presence at Oktoberfest, the vibrant festival characterised by carnival festivities, lively music, and traditional attire such as Dirndl dresses and lederhosen.
“The traditional sound continues to influence German celebrations and music across the world 200 years later," Google Doodle said.
