The worsening air quality has led Delhi to an unsettling reality: school closures. A lot of parents are concerned about the challenge that comes with it, the challenge of keeping your kids engaged, active, and safe indoors.
Dr Sachin Sakharkar, consultant and neonatologist & paediatrician at Surya Hospitals in Chembur, shared some engaging strategies from a developmentalpaediatrician's perspective to keep childrenactive and healthy throughout the day.
How To Keep Children Busy At Home?
Dr Sakharkar said, “Children can be challenging to keep busy during the day. Kids are energetic and playful and, therefore, cannot be coerced into following rigid fitness regimens. They should have enjoyment while playing to stay active all day. Maintaining children's physical activity throughout the day is essential for their general well-being as it supports their emotional and cognitive growth in addition to their physical health.”
Healthy Engaging Routine For Kids At Home
Here is a healthy engaging routine for children that should be maintained, according to the paediatrician.
- Playing Mind-Stimulating Games: The expert said,“Playing mind-stimulating games such as puzzles, building blocks, Lego games, Memory games or Chess, helps children with positive cognitive and mental health.”
- Encourage Enjoyable Activities: “Kids are inherently lively. They are more inclined to join when they are playing rather than following rigorous exercise regimens. Arrange enjoyable activities in the local park, such as a scavenger hunt. Sports items like balls or skipping ropes can be used by kids as scavenge items. Leave a note recommending that the sport be played as a group utilising the materials after the quest to make it more enjoyable,” shared Dr Sachin.
- Engage and Ask: “Find out what kids are interested in and what kinds of activities they would like to partake in. While some kids would like to take dance classes, others could be more interested in sports like basketball or cricket,” he added.
- Limit Screen Time: Sachin mentioned, “While using electronic devices is a common source of entertainment for children these days, parents should limit the screen timing for the children. Instead, engaging them in activities like playing or even reading or arts and crafts can help boost their cognitive health and also enhance mindfulness.”

- Include The Family: “Children learn best in an atmosphere that supports them. By maintaining a regular exercise regimen, elders can serve as role models for younger generations. Additionally, wherever feasible, organise family-friendly group events. Incorporate siblings and elders. Engage in enjoyable activities such as hiking, camping, or cycling together. Additionally, you can incorporate enjoyable rest activities like board games or verbal games,” advised Dr Sachin.
- Encourage Goal-Setting and Celebrate Achievements: “Setting and achieving small physical activity goals can improve children's self-esteem and resilience. According to developmental paediatricians, goal-setting gives children a sense of purpose and accomplishment, helping them develop a growth mindset. Encourage them to set realistic goals, like learning to ride a bike, completing a hike, or running a specific distance, and celebrate these milestones to boost their confidence,” concluded Dr Sakharkar.
