Shanthi Ramachandran was a banker by profession, who after retirement chose to become a food blogger on Instagram.
“My son made me join a culinary group on Facebook because of my interest in cooking and I started to interact with the community over there,” said Ramachandran. “I was passionate about cooking since my school days. My ammas and akkas were great chefs. I used to participate in cooking competitions and quizzes conducted by Tamil magazines, and won several awards,” she said.
Her initial passion for the culinary arts led her to venture into the world of Instagram after her daughter motivated her to do so. “I was on sabbatical leave to be with my daughter during her pregnancy. She wanted me to document my simple recipes through Instagram, so I started posting my daily cooking which became a hit over a period of time,” she said.
She attributes her success to her authenticity. “I don’t take any extra effort to gain followers because my intention was to share my knowledge. Being genuine and true from my heart, the transparency in my recipes, simple day-to-day cooking and easy cooking methods can be the reasons for my organic following,” she added.
She further said that she does not feel awkward among the younger content creators because a majority of her following is by the Gen-Z crowd who clarify their doubts with her that they would hesitate to ask their own elders. “Moreover, they are ready to help any time if I need to learn new things on Instagram.”
“Behind every recipe is a story and tradition which I share through my page,” Ramachandran said.
Two incidents fortified her belief in the community she was creating through the platform–when a Japanese woman who was interested in Indian cooking approached her to learn about traditional South Indian recipes, and when a young lady who followed her for a few years and came to know about her son through her page, and is today her daughter-in-law. “These memories make all the difference,” she said.

Known as the ‘sassy saasu’ on Instagram, Manjri Varde is an artist by profession who created her account earlier to follow her daughter who made craft videos.
“Initially, I would just share my art, images of nature, a few anecdotes about myself, and things that interested me. I did not have any specific plan to become famous on the internet,” she said.
She said that she is surprised to have 138K followers on the platform, and thanks her daughter-in-law, actress Sameera Reddy, who lives and breathes social media. “She started us on a cooking journey during the pandemic. We were held within the confines of our homes like most people and she started to present some traditional recipes I cooked. Her ‘Messy Mama’ and my ‘Sassy Saasu’ worked its magic,” she added.
Her eclectic fashion sense and wonderful acting skills also add to the charm.
“I follow so many Gen-Z creators and it is amazing what they do. It never matters how old they are,” said Varde. “I feel grateful whenever a young person comes to say ‘Hi’ to me. It is an humbling experience to personally connect with them.”

Until the age of 65, Rajini Chandy was a housewife. Things changed after she played the protagonist in the Malayalam movie, Oru Muthassi Gadha, and received an award for best debutante. “The director took the audition of 500 women before someone referred him to me, and I was cast in the lead role,” she said.
She had always been a rebel. After shifting from Mumbai to Kerala in 1995, she broke many gender stereotypes during that time. “A 39-year-old woman like me was wearing jeans when even the youngsters did not dare to do so. I kept my hair loose, wore sunglasses, had dark lipsticks on, did not cover my head in church and drove freely. I even played badminton in the club where only men were seen playing,” she said.
At the age of 71, she can be seen at the gym at 5 am. Moreover, recently she was featured in a Tamil movie called Kathir.
Having amassed a following of 20K, she feels honoured to be recognised for her work. “I don’t consider myself to be a celebrity,” she added.

A gynaecologist by profession, Dr. Anjali Kumar always felt a huge gap in the medical information available on the internet which was credible and correct. “After being in the profession for more than 30 years, the pandemic-induced lockdown gave me a chance to start Maitri, a social-media based startup to create awareness about sexual and reproductive health,” she said.
Her videos and posts are easy to understand, devoid of jargon, and can be both serious and light-hearted.
Dr. Kumar noted that it is never too late to learn new things. “When I first started using Instagram, I did not know the difference between a story, a post and a carousel. I hired an intern who made me understand the basics,” she said.
Despite working a 12 to 14 hour shift as a medical professional, she devotes her nights and weekends shooting and editing reels and videos.
She believes that she has been able to create a community where people feel comfortable talking about these subjects, and where she gets to learn a lot of new tools from her followers.
“I had a woman from Tripura who was living in the mountains tell me that my platform helped her access medical information which was not readily available to her,” said Dr. Kumar. “Moreover, a group of women sitting in UAE told me that they would watch my content during kitty parties,” she added.
What makes her stand out is her honest storytelling, non-judgemental and non-biased attitude, and valuable information which makes it worth everyone’s time.
Recently, they launched a woman’s health course on PCOS reversal. “We are also going to start courses on pregnancy diet, exercise and labour; available to all women around the world, irrespective of remoteness,” she said.
