The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) will no longer accept the Aadhar card as a legitimate proof for date of birth. EPFO, which falls under the Ministry of Labour and Employment of the Government of India, made the announcement via a circular on Tuesday. The decision was made with a prior approval received from the Central Provident Fund Commissioner (CPFC).

EPFO has followed a directive from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). According to UIDAI’s directive with circular number 08 of 2023, Aadhar was being considered as a proof for the date of birth by several beneficiaries. While Aadhar is a unique identifier, it was not recognised as a proof of date of birth according to the Aadhar Act, 2016. As per the directive, UIDAI emphasized that Aadhar was a proof of identity, and not of birth.

In view of UIDAI’s directives, the EPFO has removed the Adhaar card from the list of acceptable documents for correcting date of birth. Necessary modification in EPFO’s application software will be made to align with the updated guidelines. The Internal System Division (ISD) will make necessary changes. EPFO has directed that all its zonal and regional offices will ensure widespread implementation of these guidelines.
