January 26 is celebrated as Republic Day in India. This day holds a special place in the hearts of Indians as the Indian constitution came into effect. A grand celebration including the unfurling of the flag by the Indian president followed by a majestic parade in the National capital of India. The parade showcases India’s rich cultural and military heritage represented by different states and cultural groups. As the Indian flag unfurls it evokes a sense of patriotism in every Indian's heart. However, hardly anyone knows the difference between unfurling and hoisting of the flag. Amidst the Republic Day preparations, let’s understand the difference between these two often used terminology.

What Does Unfurling The Flag Mean? 

The term ‘Unfurling’ means unfolding a rolled-up flag attached to a rope. This act is done by attaching the flag to a rope and then pulling the rope to raise the flag high. This process is done for large flags that are too big to be hoisted. The Indian president unfurls the flag on 26th January every year followed by the national anthem.

What Does Hoisting The Flag Mean? 

The term ‘Hoisting’ is the act of raising the flag a flagpole or mast. This is done with a flagpole which is a rope used to raise and lower the flag. The flag is usually attached to the mast and then pulled up the mast to the top. This act is accompanied by a flag-raising ceremony followed by the national anthem. The Indian Prime Minister hoists the Indian flag on the 15th of August every year.

Difference Between Unfurling And Hoisting The Flag

There is a significant difference between unfurling and hoisting the flag which is majorly determined by the positioning of the flag. The National Flag is hoisted on Independence Day by the Prime Minister of India. The aim of hoisting the flag is to honour the historical event of the day. On the other hand, the national flag is unfurled on Republic Day by the President of India on Independence Day to celebrate the adoption of the Indian constitution.
