Delhi Accident: Road Safety Rules To Abide By

Delhi witnessed a horrific incident at the beginning of the New Year 2023 when a 20-year-old woman was killed after she was hit and dragged for several kilometres by a car. Five people have been arrested in the case and have been taken into remand for three days.

In the wee hours of Sunday, January 1, 2023, in outer Delhi’s Sultanpuri, Anjali Singh was dragged for nearly one and a half hours for nearly 12 kilometres after her scooty was hit by a Baleno car.

A few days prior to this, Indian cricketer Rishabh Pant also met with a road accident on his way to Roorkee early in the morning and got severly injured. He has been transferred to Mumbai’s Kokilaben Hospital from Dehradun on January 4 after his health was comparatively stable.

Such accidents time and again make us wonder how safe are we actually on the roads both behind the wheels and outside. As per government data, about 80,000 people are killed in road accidents every year in India which is 13 percent of the total fatality all over the world. And most of the time, it is the man behind the wheels whose carelessness or lack of road safety awareness causes the accident.

Here are some of the rules to abide by released by the government to avoid road crashes.

• Avoid driving on the wrong side.
• Wearing helmets – Not wearing helmets among riders and pillion riders on a motorized two-wheeler vehicle can lead to deadly road accidents.
• Avoid overloading – Excessive overhanging load or carrying passengers more than the permissible limit/capacity of a vehicle can be a cause of accidents.
• Using proper reflectors on vehicles – Not using reflectors creates poor visibility of the vehicle particularly on trolleys, and bull carts, especially during the nights can cause deadly road crashes.
• Wearing a seat belt – Not wearing a seat belt when riding in four-wheeler, small passenger vehicles, buses and truck drivers, and passengers in the front seat of the four-wheelers is a punishable offense in India.
• No Drink and Drive – Drinking and driving is a serious concern in road accidents and a strict punishable offense in India.
• Avoid using a mobile phone while driving – Mobile phone usage while riding or driving a vehicle. It can be talking, texting, or listening with earphones while driving or riding.
• Using zebra crossing and footpath – Pedestrians not using zebra crossing and footpath for crossing and walking and use of unauthorized crossings will cause severe accidents.
• Avoid wrong overtaking – Overtaking of the vehicle from left and across a solid lane marking and at areas with limited or poor sight distance, curves, speeding vehicles, etc.
