In the movie, Deepika Padukone will be seen playing the role of Laxmi Agarwal. The movie is being helmed by Raazi director Meghna Gulzar. Chhapaak is based on the life of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal.
In the image Deepika has shared on her Insta handle, Deepika looks completely transformed into an acid attack survivor. She underwent a full prosthetic makeup that clearly show the scars and burns on the face. Deepika's character in the movie is called Malti. She captioned the picture, "A character that will stay with me forever...#MaltiShoot begins today!#Chhapaak Releasing-10th January, 2020."
Who Is Laxmi?
Chhapaak is inspired by a true story of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal. Laxmi Agarwal is from Delhi. When she was just 15, she was attacked by a man called Naeem Khan. This man was twice her age and kept proposing her. However, when Laxmi refused his proposal many times, he attacked her with his two other companions. He threw a beer bottle loaded with acid on her. She was immediately taken to the hospital by a taxi driver. Laxmi had to go through 9 major operations. Yet, she survived and today she is working for all the acid attack victims.
That's not an end to Laxmi's story. Laxmi fought against the culprits and finally managed to put them behind the bars. She further worked to put an end to acid sales looking at the increasing numbers of acid attacks in the country. In the year 2013, the court finally heard her plea and new restrictions were set on the sale of acid in the nation. Laxmi also worked with other acid attack survivors to get immediate justice and rehabilitation for acid attack survivors.
Laxmi founded an NGO, Chhanv Foundation to help acid attack survivors in the year 2014. Laxmi received International Womam Of Courage Award from Michelle Obama in the same year. Laxmi's story is way more than an acid attack survivor. Her aim is to give voice to all the acid attack survivors. She wants the societies to change the perception towards acid attack survivors.
In an interview, when Laxmi was asked about Deepika playing an acid attack survivor in the movie, she said, “I am so happy that Deepika is playing the role. I have no right to judge her. How can I judge someone for something which I can’t do. She has played wonderful characters on screen and I believe she will give her best.”
At an event earlier, Meghna Gulzar, director of the movie, shared “You won’t be seeing Deepika, you know. You will be seeing a disfigured Deepika.” She also shared that there is a strange similarity between Deepika Padukone and the acid attack survivor.
