Has any show made you squirm with disgust but love the drama at the same time? Do you have a love-hate relationship with a show? Then here’s a list of shows that you can cringe-watch.
Sima Taparia from Mumbai is back with a season two. Only this time, it is full of even more backwardness and traditionality. Though inherently cringe, this show depicts the modern realities of arranged marriages and as much as we would like to believe otherwise, this institution is as messed up as it gets in the show. Not only is the show casteist and classist for not showing anything below upper caste rich families, but it tells mostly women to ‘compromise’. Any woman with a long list of criteria for their future husband is shunned, and is told to adjust. Is it wrong that women are seeking their equals? Well, in the show it is. ‘Compromise’ and ‘adjust’ become Taparia’s favourite buzzwords that she throws around like confetti. And where are all the LGBTQ+ individuals? The show is strictly cis-heterosexual, despite the one incident in a crossover moment where Seema Sajdeh from The Fabulous Lives Of Bollywood Wives mockingly asked the matchmaker to find her a wife. In spite of all the garb, it is still a show we cringe-watched till the end even though none of Taparia’s match-making skills worked.

The show’s main premise is that eligible bachelors and bachelorettes try to find love by not seeing how they look physically, so that they can judge each other on other characteristics than physical attributes. However, the show chooses all conventionally good-looking people and the one plus-size person is not even given any screen time, making it hypocritical. Moreover, there is a contestant named Abhishek (Shake) who demeaningly asks women if they work out and to describe themselves based on their appearance. Despite the well-meaning message and intent of the show to prove ‘Love is Blind’, it lands on its face as once contestants reveal themselves to their chosen ones, all they can see is the person’s appearance.
Spoiler Alert: Two couples do end up with each other and get married, but get separated very soon.
You might be thinking that who is still watching Bigg Boss in this day and age? There’s a season 16 for a reason. Their TRPs are over the roof. If you’re a ‘Bhai’ fan then Salman Khan in his taskmaster avatar can be a reason for these booming ratings. All the spicy drama in this show from catfights to messy relationships, and controversies are definitely entertaining the masses. So if you’re bored to death and have nothing on your watch list, this show is worth a watch to give you a quick lesson on all that is problematic with Indian television.
A reality show based on the same formula on which The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills works, the star-studded cast includes mommies of star kids and yesteryear actors. If you think this will portray an intimate and real glimpse into the lives of celebrities, you’re in no way going to get an insider’s look as the series is full of glamour, glitz and a scripted plot. It also has problematic statements and half-baked fights, which are unbelievable.
Bonus: Ranveer Singh appears in an episode which lowkey shows him getting lovey-dovey with Maheep Kapoor, who had a big fan-girl moment.

Karan Johar is back at it again with his blingy outfits, self-effacing jokes and Bollywood celebrities who talk about the most nonsensical topics. This time the rapid fires are less fiery and more practised and the buzzer round is full of mishaps and foot-in-mouth moments. Johar also seems to promote ‘nepo kids’ and abusive relationships (case in point: Kabir Singh, a remake of Arjun Reddy). Maybe the best part of the show is the last episode which brings together social media influencers and comics including Kusha Kapila, Tanmay Bhatt, Niharika NM and Danish Sait, who in the finale give awards for the best moments of the show. Johar also gets candid about his mental health journey which is heartening to listen to and the bravest moment in the entire series. Shout out to Arjun Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor for being the most real ever!
