Nahay Khay marks the beginning of the Chhath festival. On this day, devotees fast all day long and consume just one meal. This year, Nahay Khay ritual will be performed on 17 November 2023, the first day of Chhath Puja according to Drikpanchang.

The second day of the festival is Kharna day or the day of purification. To purify themselves, devotees fast without water from sunrise to sunset. During sunrise, food is offered to the Sun God. Following the ritual, devotees consume prasad.

The third day is believed to be the main day of the Chhath puja. Devotees offer Arghya (water) to the setting sun. It is only this time of the year when water is offered to the sun during sunset.

On the fourth day of Chhath, Arghya (water offering) is offered to the rising sun, the Arghya is also known as Usha Arghya, dedicated to Sun God's wife. It is the culmination day and many devotees who fast from day 2 of the festival break their fast after giving Arghya to the Sun God.
