The highly anticipated festival of the year has arrived once again. Each year, Chaitra Navratri is celebrated with great zeal and splendour throughout the country. Chaitra Navratri is a nine-day festival dedicated to honouring the nine incarnations of Goddess Durga. These divine forms include Maa Shailputri, Maa Brahmacharini, Maa Chandraghanta, Maa Kushmanda, Maa Skandamata, Maa Katyayani, Maa Kalaratri, Maa Mahagauri, and Maa Siddhidatri. This year, Chaitra Navratri commenced on April 9, 2024, and will continue until April 17, 2024.

The fourth day of Chaitra Navratri, according to the Panchang, is dedicated to the worship of Maa Kushmanda. Renowned astrologer Pandit Arvind Tripathi emphasises the significance of this day for worshipping Maa Kushmanda, the goddess of light and power. It is believed that worshipping Maa Kushmanda can bring prosperity, success, and knowledge.

Who Is Maa Kushmanda?

Maa Kushmanda is depicted as an eight-armed goddess, as described by Pandit Arvind Tripathi. She holds various objects in her hands, including a kamandal, lotus, nectar-filled pot, chakra, gada, bow, arrow, and garland. Maa Kushmanda rides a tiger and is particularly fond of the colour green. Therefore, wearing green during her puja is considered auspicious. According to the scriptures, offering Malpua as bhog to Maa Kushmanda brings special benefits.

Puja Vidhi (Rituals) for Maa Kushmanda Puja

On the fourth day of Chaitra Navratri, Pandit Arvind Tripathi recommends following these puja rituals:

  • Wear yellow clothes and worship Maa Kushmanda.
  • Apply yellow Chandan to her idol.
  • Offer Kumkum, Mauli, and Akshat.
  • Offer a betel leaf with a little saffron on it while chanting the mantra "Om Brim Brihaspataye Namah."
  • Now chant the mantra "Om Kushmandayai Namah."
  • Recite the Durga Saptashati.
  • Offer yellow sweets and bangles to Maa Kushmanda, as these are considered her favourites.
