History Of Baisakhi(Vaisakhi)
Baisakhi is celebrated as a Sikh New Year. This year it will be observed on April 13. It has been celebrated in Punjab for many centuries. According to Sikh literature, this day marks the birthday of the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh who laid the foundation of Sikh culture and brotherhood, ‘Khalsa’ in the year 1699. The martyrdom of Guru Teg Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru, led his son Guru Gobind Singh to become the next Gurus of the Sikhs and further, he chose Baisakhi as the occasion to convert the Sikhs into a family of soldier saints, known as Khalsa Panth.
Significance Of Baisakhi
In the northern regions of India, especially in Punjab and Haryana, and some parts of western Uttar Pradesh, Baisakhi (baisakhi subh muhurat) is celebrated with much zeal and enthusiasm. This day is observed as an ancient spring harvest festival where farmers seek blessings from their agricultural land and then start harvesting their first crop of the season. According to the Hindu calendar, this day is marked as the first day of Vaisakh month i.e. April-May, every year.

Traditions or Celebrations On Baisakhi (Vaisakhi)
On the occasion of Baisakhi (baisakhi songs to celebrate the festival), people visit decorated Gurudwaras, attend kirtans, hold nagar kirtans, and share festive food with loved ones to celebrate this day. There are several traditions and customs associated with this festival which are followed by the sikh community across the country. People perform Bhangra, indulge in delicious food and participate in Lungar for the society. Punjabi farmers celebrate this day as Thanksgiving. They express gratitude towards the Almighty for the blessing of the harvest and the beginnings of a new season.
